Gilbert started the 2024-25 season with his hometown Sabres, appearing in 25 games before being included in the major trade deadline deal with the Senators centered around Josh Norris and Dylan Cozens. He skated in four more games with Ottawa to finish the season.
The Chicago Blackhawks originally selected Gilbert in the third round (No. 91 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The 6’2″ left-shot defender spent three seasons at Notre Dame before turning pro in the Blackhawks organization in 2018-19.
In 2020, shortly before the start of his third pro season, Gilbert found himself on the move from Chicago as part of a major deal in which he and Brandon Saad went to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Nikita Zadorov and Anton Lindholm.
Gilbert appeared in three NHL games with the Avalanche before resurfacing with the Calgary Flames in the 2022-23 season. He collected 11 points in 57 games over parts of two seasons in Calgary while getting his first real shot at being a semi-regular NHL player.
Through 111 career NHL games over parts of six seasons split between the Blackhawks, Avalanche, Flames, Bruins, and Senators, Gilbert has collected three goals and 20 points to go along with 138 penalty minutes. He’ll make a fierce addition to Rick Tocchet’s blue line in Philadelphia.
