Flyers' Travis Konecny out with upper-body injury

Philadelphia Flyers winger Travis Konecny is going to miss Saturday night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens with an upper-body injury.

Konecny suffered the injury in Thursday night’s game against the Boston Bruins late in the second period. He was skating along the boards while pressured by Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy when Konecny’s outright right arm was accidentally clipped by David Pastrnak as Konecny was passing the Bruins forward.

Konecny had no points in 11:13 of ice time in the 4-1 loss to Boston.

Konecny returned to Philadelphia to get a further evaluation on the injury. There is currently no word on the severity of the injury and how long Konecny will be out.

If Konecny misses any significant amount of time, it will be a big blow to the strong start he had this season. In 17 games this season, he has seven goals, 12 assists and 19 points, and he is on pace for his first season above a point per game. The closest he had been previously was his 24 goals, 37 assists and 61 points in 2019-20, which he achieved in 66 games.

The 25 year old forward is in seventh season with the Flyers, who he’s played with for the entirety of his career after being selected 24th overall in 2015 by Philadelphia. He is currently in the fourth year of a six-year contract he signed with the team, with a cap hit of $5.5 million.

The Flyers will hope for nothing long-term for Konecny’s injury, as they already have a pile of injuries to deal with. They’re currently missing forwards Sean Couturier, James van Riemsdyk and Wade Allison, along with defenseman Ryan Ellis.

The Flyers have fallen down to Earth a little bit after a hot start to the season. They currently sit sixth in the Metropolitan Division with a 7-7-3 record.
