Former Blackhawks Defenseman Facing Surprise Career Move

Calvin de Haan has bounced around the NHL recently, and now it appears as though the veteran is heading overseas for his next contract.

The past few years haven't been the best in the NHL for Calvin de Haan, but the 2024/25 campaign was the worst of it, as he bounced between the Colorado Avalanche and the New York Rangers as a depth defenseman.

In 47 games, the 34-year old veteran tallied no goals and 8 assists, expressing frustration with how his time in New York was handled, and now he appears to be departing the NHL entirely.

European Club Reportedly Targeting Veteran Blueliner Calvin De Haan

After not securing a contract or much interest this summer, a report has now revealed that de Haan is fielding interest from Brynas IF in Sweden to continue his hockey career overseas.

While this may be a step down from the NHL, Brynas IF and the Swedish Hockey League are seen as a very high standard in Europe, and given the level that de Haan can still play at, this would be a perfect fit for him.

What's Next After Three Seasons in Chicago for De Haan?

Since departing the Blackhawks in 2021/22, de Haan has bounced around the NHL, playing in Carolina, Tampa Bay, New York and Colorado in that time, and after expressing his frustration at the Rangers this past season and struggling on the ice, it's no surprise that he hasn't gotten many NHL offers.

If this is the end of de Haan's NHL run, he ends his career with 149 points tallied over 679 games played between the Islanders, Blackhawks, Lightning, Hurricanes, Avalanche and Rangers, but with plenty to offer on the ice and as a locker room leader still, there's always a chance he can return in the future.
