The Boston Bruins are set to open training camp, and while much of the focus has been on Matthew Poitras, Fraser Minten, and Fabian Lysell, another name may quietly emerge as a storyline.

The upcoming preseason is full of opportunity, and Matej Blumel is the kind of player who could push his way into the picture without many fans seeing it coming.

Bruins fans are eager to see how this roster evolves after a summer of depth signings. Don Sweeney focused heavily on shoring up the bottom six, but sometimes the most surprising contributors arrive from outside the spotlight. Training camp often produces one player who wasn't expected to make a big push, and this year Blumel is worth watching.

Matej Blumel has the skills and scoring touch the Boston Bruins need

Blumel arrives in Boston after signing a one-year deal worth $875,000. He brings size, versatility, and the ability to play both wings, traits that fit perfectly into the Bruins' system.

He has struggled to crack the NHL level with Dallas, but he produced back-to-back 30-goal seasons in the AHL with the Texas Stars. Last year he scored 39 goals and 72 points, proving he can finish consistently.

Scoring depth has been a problem in Boston, and the Bruins need someone to chip in from the lower lines.

"He's a player with a lethal shot and the drive to create offense,"
one AHL scout told The Hockey Writers.

The Bruins finished near the bottom of the league in goals last season, and it was clear that offense needed reinforcements.

"We have to find guys who can finish, and Blumel has done that at every level so far,"
said one Eastern Conference coach in an interview with NHL.com.

What makes him intriguing is his combination of speed, strong skating, and a tenacious forecheck. He brings energy and a scoring touch, two qualities Boston's bottom six has lacked.

I believe he is the kind of player who could become a camp surprise if given the chance to compete for ice time.

The spotlight may remain on Poitras, Minten, and Lysell, but don't be surprised if Blumel forces the coaching staff to make some tough decisions this fall.
