Former Dallas Stars forward Luke Glendening signs PTO with the New Jersey Devils as the 36-year-old veteran looks to extend his 13-year NHL career.
Luke Glendening has already carved out an impressive NHL career, but the veteran forward isn't done yet. After suiting up in 864 career games over 13 years and three teams, the 36-year-old has agreed to a professional tryout (PTO) with the New Jersey Devils in hopes of extending his career into a 14th season.
Glendening spent last year with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he appeared in 77 games, collecting four goals and three assists for seven points. He also added two more points (1+1) across five playoff games.
Known more for his defensive presence and faceoff ability than his scoring touch, the Grand Rapids native continues to offer a steady veteran option for any bottom-six unit.
Dallas Stars fans will remember Glendening's steady presence between 2021 and 2023, where he played in 152 games for the club. During his time in Dallas, he recorded 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points, while logging heavy penalty-killing minutes and bringing leadership to the locker room.
While Glendening's offensive numbers have never been flashy, his ability to play in tough defensive situations has made him a trusted role player for every coach he's worked under.
As The Hockey News reported, he joins goaltender Adam Scheel as the second former Dallas player to accept a tryout with the Devils this fall.
At 36, Glendening will need to show he can still handle the speed of the modern game, but his track record of reliability could give him an edge.
"You don't stay in the league for over 800 games unless you bring value, and Glendening has always done that in the right role," one Eastern Conference scout told reporters earlier this summer.
As NHL.com notes, the Devils continue to explore depth options for their bottom six, and Glendening's tryout could be an audition for exactly that.
Personally, I think this tryout makes sense for both sides, New Jersey gets a no-risk look at a proven veteran, and Glendening gets one more chance to extend an already admirable NHL career.
