The NHL is about halfway through the offseason with the draft and July 1 Free Agency in the rearview. That being said there are still plenty of names available as free agents, some still likely to sign. There’s also a handful of players who are former Edmonton Oilers Alumni still on the market.
Lets take a look at some of those players.
The 23-year-old Tullio was initially drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round, 126th overall of the 2020 NHL draft out of the OHL’s Oshawa Generals.
Eventually he signed by the Oilers after the COVID-19 year playing with Liptovsky Mikulas HC in the top Slovak league, and an impressive follow up season with where he led Oshawa in points for the entire 2021–22.
The Detroit product would go on to play two seasons with Bakersfield before being included in the Ryan McLeod for Matthew Savoie trade to Buffalo.
Oilers fans are probably more familiar with the offensive defender. Barrie has spent parts of 14 seasons in the NHL—most notably with the Colorado Avalanche where he broke into the league full time during the 2013–14 season.
Primarily known as a point-getting blueliner, he set a carreer high of 59 points in the 2018–19 season with the Avalanche. After, he saw himself getting traded to Toronto in the 2019 deal that sent Nazem Kadri to the Avs.
Eventually Barrie signed with the Edmonton Oilers in October of 2020. He went on to appear with the Oilers for parts of three seasons from 2020 until 2023. He largely served as a capable power play orientated defender and had some solid seasons on the Oilers backend.
The now 34-year-old defender was part of the February 2023 package to acquire Mattias Ekholm from Nashville.
He would go on to play for Nashville for two seasons, and after showing some decline they chose not to re-sign him. The defender also signed with the Calgary Flames, where he eventually saw himself be put on waivers and assigned to the Calgary Wranglers.
Athanasiou was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2012 draft by Detroit, and made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings in the 2015–16 season. Playing four and a half seasons with the Red Wings, Athanasiou was a stable middle-six forward that provided scoring and responsibility.
He was first acquired by the Edmonton Oilers in a February 2020 package that saw fan favourite Sam Gagner and two second-rounders head to Detroit. Ultimately Athanasiou had a limited tenure in Edmonton.
Athanasiou only played a combined 13 games posting two points in the 2019–20 season for Edmonton. After that short stint, he eventually moving on to the L.A. Kings, and then the Chicago Blackhawks.
After spending a large portion of the past 2024–25 season in the AHL with the Rockford Icehogs, the Woodbridge product finds himself without a contract for next season.
The American goalie was initially drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in 2010, but wouldn’t find traction until a move to the L.A. Kings, eventually making his first full NHL season with the Kings in 2018–19. From there he would then be traded to Toronto where he saw his stock rise the most.
In Toronto he established himself as a full-fledged starter posting seasons of .915, .921, and .914 SV% across the 2019–20 season until the 2021–22. This created lots of buzz for the former first-rounder, which led to the Oilers signing him to a $5M AAV starting the 2022–23 season.
He underperformed, posting just a .888 in his single full season with the Oilers, eventually being assigned to the Condors in the 2023–24 season, and being bought out shortly after.
After an NHLPA assistance program aided his mental health issues, he found himself with Detroits farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffens.
He remains without a contract for next season, but still has $1.5M on the books for Edmonton until the conclusion of the 2029–30 season.
The St. Louis Blues first-rounder of 2017 has had a well traveled journey at the age of 26. First signing with St. Louis for the 2017–18 season, where he would then spend the majority of three seasons on their AHL squad the San Antonio Rampage, and a KHL stop in Omsk during the 2020–21 season.
He would make his full time NHL debut in the 2021–22 season with St. Louis.
The Russian forward was then traded to the Oilers in exchange for prospect Dmitri Samorukov in October of 2022. The forward would spend the 2022–23 season with the Oilers where he posted a career high 21 points across 57 games.
He would then get traded by Edmonton to Detroit with Kailer Yamamoto in the summer of 2023. Detroit would then trade him a fourth time to San Jose where he has played the previous two seasons in the NHL.
