A former NHL safety advisor is revealing why Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett avoided punishment for his controversial hit on Toronto's Anthony Stolarz.
It's already been one of the most controversial moments so far in this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs, and it drew not only a massive response for a massive punishment but an equal outcry when no such punishment came.
Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett, who already has a well-established reputation for playing with an edge to his game, injured Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender (and his former teammate) Anthony Stolarz when he appeared to elbow him in the side of the head.
The incident took place in the 2nd period of Game 1 between the divisional foes, resulting in Stolarz's departure from the game; he was seen vomiting at the Maple Leafs bench and was even reportedly stretchered out of the venue before being hospitalized for evaluation.
The outcry amongst Leafs fans calling for considerable punishment for Bennett was immediate, and they were furious when the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that he would face no disciplinary action.
Former NHL defenseman Chris Pronger, who was known for playing with an edge during his playing days and who once later worked for the DOPS, weighed in on his X account.
Was this a blatant elbow to the back of Anthony Stolarz head? YES. Should it have been a penalty? YES. Was Bennett trying to injure Stolarz who is a former teammate from just last year? I DON'T THINK SO. Was he trying to rattle Stolarz? ABSOLUTELY.
Pronger then added:
Fans can expect to see fireworks between the Panthers and Maple Leafs stemming from the incident when they play Game 2 on Wednesday evening.
