Friedman: Blackhawks May Not Qualify Defenseman Caleb Jones
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

While most of the Chicago Blackhawks fanbase is focused on the upcoming NHL Draft, there is still plenty of other offseason items to focus on. On Wednesday, the latest episode of ' 32 Thoughts ' was released on all platforms. NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman had some insights on one particular Blackhawks defenseman. According to Friedman, there are rumblings that the Hawks may not qualify restricted free agent Caleb Jones

This report is one that will generate a lot of reaction. The first reaction is likely something along the lines of "what does his brother, Seth, think?" Naturally, that is a fair reaction. However, the NHL is a business at the end of the day and sometimes there isn't always room for brotherly love in the future plans of an organization.

Jeff Marek mentioned that point as well. Stating that "the collar fits tight when you have Seth Jones there as well." However, think about what the Hawks have coming in the pipeline.

Ideally, there is a chance that all of Alex Vlasic, Kevin Korchinksi, and Isaak Phillips make the opening night roster. In addition, Jones will likely compete with the likes of Jarred Tinordi, who recently received an extension, Wyatt Kaiser, and others for ice time. As of now, it appears to be a numbers game more than a reflection of his play and his brother being on the roster that influences the team's decision.

If that is the case, Jones will become a free agent. Although he may not be qualified, Jones could still return to the Hawks as an unrestricted free agent. With playing time in mind however, Jones might want a new opportunity elsewhere, especially when a team like the Florida Panthers will be without Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour for a large chunk of the season.

Although the Hawks re-signed Andreas Athanasiou earlier this offseason, the other pending free agents won't necessarily have the same fate. Jones will likely be elsewhere at the start of next season. Perhaps a chance at more playing time will help him secure a nice little payday in a shallow free agent class.
