Friedman Shoots Down Jay Woodcroft to Maple Leafs Speculation

Elliotte Friedman has pushed back against recent speculation linking former Edmonton Oilers head coach and assistant coach of the Anaheim Ducks, Jay Woodcroft, to the Toronto Maple Leafs’ coaching vacancy. Reports were that he was a frontrunner for the Maple Leafs coaching job, but Friedman says the Leafs haven’t even sought permission to speak with him.

In his latest 32 Thoughts column and during a hit on The FAN Hockey Show, Friedman stated he does not believe the Maple Leafs have asked for permission to speak with Woodcroft. He added that he’s not on their priority list, and it’s entirely possible Toronto never reaches out to him at all.

“I do not believe Toronto has asked permission to talk to him, and I think it’s quite possible Toronto doesn’t ask to talk to him,” Friedman reported on May 29.

This clarification directly contradicts earlier reports by NHL insider Frank Seravalli, that suggested Woodcroft was scheduled to interview with the Leafs this week and was viewed as one of the front-runners for the job. Friedman noted he is aware of those reports but does not believe they are accurate.

Woodcroft, who was fired by the Oilers midway through the 2023-24 season before later being replaced by Kris Knoblauch, remains a highly regarded coach. He was said to have interviewed with the Los Angeles Kings last week and is considered a strong candidate to land an NHL head coaching job next season, whether in Toronto or elsewhere.

Thorough but Fluid Search Under Chayka

The Maple Leafs, now under new general manager John Chayka, are conducting a wide-ranging coaching search. Sources indicate they plan to speak with as many as 20 candidates with varying levels of experience. Most interviews at this stage are being conducted via Zoom. As such, it’s a bit surprising they’ve not requested a chance to speak with Woodcroft.

While some outlets had positioned Woodcroft as a strong fit due to his offensive-minded style and previous success developing young talent in Edmonton, Friedman’s sources suggest he is currently not on Toronto’s radar.

Whether Woodcroft ultimately emerges as a candidate or lands elsewhere remains a storyline to follow.
