Get to Know Newest Devil, Cody Glass
Cody Glass, Nashville Predators (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

It was recently reported by TSN insider Pierre LeBrun that the New Jersey Devils traded a “third-round pick and some minor league players” in exchange for 25-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins forward Cody Glass.

Glass, a former sixth overall pick (Vegas Golden Knights, 2017), has just four goals and 15 points in 51 games this season but plays a stellar defensive game. According to Rono Hockey, he’s in the 90th percentile of league defense. He’s also a pending restricted free agent, meaning he could potentially remain the Devils’ 4C of the near future.

His best season came in 2022-23 with the Nashville Predators where he had 35 points with a plus-9 rating. He’s also 52.7% in the faceoff circle, giving them a much-needed potentially reliable option with the recent downfall of Erik Haula.

Glass has previously represented Team Canada at the U18 Worlds, World Junior Championships and Men’s Worlds. In 2023, he helped the Canadians win gold at Worlds with four assists in 10 games.

The Devils have been deploying Justin Dowling, a career American Hockey League (AHL) journeyman, in the bottom-six fairly often. While Dowling has done a respectable job holding his own, Glass is a certain upgrade.

With the emphasis on defense, it is starting to become clear that general manager Tom Fitzgerald’s plan is to make the team as stifling as possible in Jack Hughes’ absence. Their best bet of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs (and succeeding there) is to win close games. Regardless, they’ll likely need more offensive firepower if they want any realistic shot.

It is unclear if the Devils are entirely done adding, but time is running very short on Friday’s 3:00 PM ET deadline.
