Get to Know the Newest Devil, Daniel Sprong
Daniel Sprong, Seattle Kraken (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

Although the trade deadline ended on March 7 at 3 pm EST, there were still some late trades that trickled in. One of them was for the New Jersey Devils. The team acquired Daniel Sprong from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick.

Sprong’s NHL career has spanned 363 games amongst six different teams.

He began his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sprong was selected in the second round, 46th overall in the 2015 Draft. From the 2015-16 to the 2018-19 season, he played in 42 games. He earned nine points via four goals and five assists. He played in his first NHL game on Oct. 8, 2015. He spent the majority of his time in these three seasons with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, and the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He played in 64 games with the Islanders during these two seasons and recorded a total of 105 points on 48 goals and 57 assists. He played his first season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2017-18. He appeared in 65 games and totaled 65 points with 32 goals and 33 assists.

On Dec. 3, 2018, Sprong was traded to the Anaheim Ducks. In return, the Penguins received Marcus Pettersson. Sprong finished the 2018-19 season with Anaheim, appearing in 47 games. He recorded 19 points via 14 goals and five assists.

During the 2019-20 season, he played with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls for 39 games. He scored 11 goals and earned 16 assists for a total of 27 points. He was called up to the Ducks for eight games and only recorded one goal and one assist in those games. On Feb. 24, 2020, he was traded to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Christian Djoos. He immediately went to the AHL’s Hershey Bears, where he played in five games to finish the season. He recorded six points with one goal and five assists.

He played 42 games with the Capitals in the 2020-21 season where he earned 20 points via 13 goals and seven assists. He began the 2021-22 season with Washington, playing in 47 games. He earned 14 goals via eight goals and six assists. On March 21, 2022, he was traded to Seattle with a fourth-round draft pick in the 2022 Draft in exchange for Marcus Johansson and a sixth-round draft pick in the 2023 Draft. He finished the season playing in 16 games with Seattle and scored six goals.

In his first full season with the Kraken, he played 66 games and recorded 46 points via 21 goals and 25 assists. The Kraken did not sign him, though, and he became a free agent. On July 1, 2023, the Detroit Red Wings signed him. He played in 76 games in the 2023-24 season, earning a points total of 43 on 18 goals and 25 assists. Detroit also did not sign him at the end of the season. Instead, Vancouver signed him when he reached free agency on July 20, 2024.

To start the 2024-25 season, he played in nine games with the Canucks, scoring one goal and two assists. On Nov. 8, 2024, he was traded back to Seattle for future considerations. He played in 10 games for Seattle and scored one goal and earned one assist. He was placed on waivers, but no team claimed him. He was sent down to the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds where he played 19 games. He earned 25 points via 11 goals and 14 assists.

Sprong has undoubtedly hopped around several teams. He has been successful in the AHL, but not nearly as much in the NHL. He has the potential to add great depth to the bottom six of the Devils. Hopefully, he will find success in New Jersey.
