Golden Knights: Five Standouts From Vegas’s Preseason

With the Golden Knights’ preseason having come to a close, let’s take a look at five standouts from Vegas’s exhibition play.

At long last, the NHL offseason is over. The preseason is in the rearview mirror, and we have meaningful hockey games on tonight.

But before we can begin to look ahead at the excitement of the new season, let us first take one final look back at the preseason. Here are five standouts from the Vegas Golden Knights’ exhibition contests.

Pavel Dorofeyev

After appearing in just 67 games over the course of his first three NHL seasons, Dorofeyev appears poised for a breakout campaign in 2024-2025. And in Saturday night’s preseason finale against the San Jose Sharks, the 23 year-old Russian winger gave fans a sneak preview of what to expect.

Dorofeyev recorded a hat trick, while also adding an assist to go along with his three goals. Despite the Sharks winning the contest 6-5, Dorofeyev was named the game’s first star.

Zach Aston-Reese

Dorofeyev wasn’t the only Golden Knight with a multi-goal game during the preseason. Earlier in the week, Zach Aston-Reese’s two-goal night led the way in Vegas’s 6-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Sadly for Golden Knights fans, however, Aston-Reese will not play for Vegas this season, as he was claimed off waivers by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. The journeyman forward had been on a two-way contract with the Golden Knights that he signed in July.

Tanner Lacynski

Much like Aston-Reese, Lacysnki agreed to a two-way contract with the Golden Knights in July. The former Ohio State standout has appeared in just 37 career NHL games, and spent all of last season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers. Despite facing long odds to make Vegas’s roster, however, Lacynski had himself a very strong preseason campaign, recording two goals and three assists.

Lacynski was placed on waivers by the Golden Knights on Sunday. Should he clear the waiver wire, he will head to Vegas’s AHL affiliate in Henderson to begin the 2024-2025 season.

Tanner Pearson

It was indeed the September of Tanner(s). After agreeing to a professional tryout agreement with Vegas over the summer, the journeyman winger Pearson had an impressive preseason. Appearing in five of the team’s six exhibition games, the journeyman winger had two goals and an assist while recording a +3 rating.

As a result of his strong preseason showing, the Golden Knights signed Pearson to a one-year, $775,000 contract on October 4.

Akira Schmid

With Aiden Hill and and Ilya Samsonov locked in as Vegas’s top two goaltenders, Schmid will almost certainly begin the season with AHL Henderson. However, the 24 year-old Swiss netminder certainly did as much as he could to challenge that during his brief preseason action.

In 4.5 periods of exhibition work, Schmid allowed just one goal, stopping 35 shots in the process. While obviously a small sample size, it was certainly an encouraging run for the young goalie. If he keeps playing at a high level, he should find himself back in the NHL soon enough.

Edmonton Oilers Land Former Winnipeg Jets Goalie In An Intriguing New Mock Trade

The Edmonton Oilers are looking for a change in net, and now a mock trade has them landing former Winnipeg Jets backup Laurent Brossoit in an intriguing deal. After two straight failed Stanley Cup Finals runs, there have been many suggestions on how the Edmonton Oilers can take that final leap, with many looking at the goaltending as a potential spot for an upgrade ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. From acquiring big name stars to running it back, every option has seemingly been suggested by Oilers fans and reporters, but now, Heavy Sports have suggested a surprise trade that would see them land a new backup in the form of former Winnipeg Jets backup Laurent Brossoit. In the deal, the team would get Brossoit with money retained and a pick for a minor league goaltender and another pick, giving them three goalies to battle it out for two NHL spots next season. Oilers receive: Laurent Brossoit ($1.65 million retained) 2026 seventh-round pick Blackhawks acquire: Connor Ungar 2028 third-round pick Brossoit hasn't played in the NHL since 2023/24, and in that season he posted a fantastic .927 save percentage and a 2.00 GAA in 23 games played, with a career average of 2.64 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 140 games. If Brossoit gets more of an opportunity, there's a belief around the league that he could be more than serviceable in any role given to him. Ultimately, at this point it looks like Kris Knoblauch and the Oilers are content to run things back in 2025/26 with the duo of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, and unless there's a big upgrade to be had that makes sense, they're content with doing just that.

Illegal tackle causes Colts RB to suffer 'severe leg injury'

The Indianapolis Colts had a scary moment on Sunday when a running back went down during an 11-on-11 team period. Per James Boyd of The Athletic, practice had to be stopped for 10 minutes while trainers attended to running back Salvon Ahmed, who suffered a "severe leg injury" after he was brought down via an illegal tackle by safety Trey Washington. "The injury occurred when Ahmed broke a long run during an 11-on-11 period," Boyd wrote. "He was tackled from behind by undrafted rookie safety Trey Washington, but when Washington grabbed Ahmed, who kept his legs churning, Washington used a hip-drop tackle to bring Ahmed down and landed on his lower right leg. Ahmed immediately grabbed his lower right leg and screamed in agony. "Steichen said the players in the developmental periods (essentially third-stringers and players lower than them on the depth chart) were instructed to tackle during 11-on-11. However, Steichen emphasized, Washington’s hip-drop tackle was obviously the wrong way to bring Ahmed down." Steichen said the coaching staff doesn't encourage hip-drop tackles, and claimed Washington is "down in the dumps" after his tackle led to Ahmed's injury. The unfortunate incident highlights how difficult it can be for NFL defenders to make a tackle. The league made the hip-drop tackle illegal to try and curb injuries, as offensive players thought it was a dirty hit. In Washington's case, the undrafted rookie free agent from Ole Miss wasn't trying to make a dirty hit but trying to make a football move in a competitive environment to keep his job. Before the injury, Ahmed was trying to make a case for the practice squad, where he spent time on during 2024.

Tiger Woods Sends Strong Message to Retiring CBS Broadcaster on Sunday

At Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, Sunday’s final round of the 2025 Wyndham Championship closed out the PGA Tour’s regular season. It also marked the end of an era for one of golf’s most revered broadcasters. For the last time, Ian Baker-Finch manned the hole-announcing microphone for CBS Sports, capping 30 years in the booth following a playing career that peaked with his victory at the 1991 Open Championship. Before the day was over, Tiger Woods took to X to salute "Finchy." "Congrats Finchy for 30 incredible years behind the microphone. You brought insight into things that the viewing audience could understand and relate to. From all of us—thanks for the memories." The message joined tributes from Jack Nicklaus, Jason Day, Adam Scott and others, underscoring Baker-Finch’s standing among champions past and present. Marlins troll Yankees with fitting song amid series sweep

The Miami Marlins turned to good ol’ Neil Diamond to clown on the New York Yankees during their impressive weekend triumph. Miami pulled off an improbable three-game series sweep of the Yankees on Sunday with a 7-3 win at LoanDepot Park in Miami. It marked the sixth consecutive series victory for the Marlins as well as their first-ever three-game sweep of the Yankees in franchise history. As Sunday’s game was nearing the end, the Marlins decided to have some fun. With the Yankees down to their last three outs entering the top of the ninth inning, “Sweet Caroline” began loudly playing inside the ballpark. Here is a video: Of course, “Sweet Caroline” is an anthem of the Boston Red Sox, the hated rivals of the Yankees. The song plays in the eighth inning of every game at Fenway Park. Fittingly enough, the 62-51 Red Sox are officially now ahead of the Yankees in the AL East standings (thanks to the Yankees’ brutal weekend against the Marlins putting them at 60-52). The Yankees only had themselves to blame for their poor weekend showing, piling on several more embarrassing mental mistakes during the series. As for the Marlins though, they are quickly looking like one of the best stories of the second half. After sitting at a dismal 25-41 in mid-June, Miami is suddenly a .500 team again at 55-55 and it has clawed to within 5.5 games back of a wild-card spot in the NL.
