Less than 24 hours after being rejected by St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko, the Buffalo Sabres had a busy night. They handily defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1, moving into a tie with the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place in the Atlantic Division. As it turns out, they also made a substantial trade.
The Sabres and the Winnipeg Jets made a trade, the Sabres swapping picks and prospects for two proven, veteran defensemen. Though there were warning signs regarding the Parayko deal, this deal wound up working for both teams. Whether the Sabres are done – they also added New York Rangers forward Sam Carrick – remains to be seen.

Some may call it an overpayment as Rosen is a promising prospect. That said, he’s had difficulty cracking the Sabres lineup. The picks are almost inconsequential at this stage because the Sabres have been hoarding draft capital for years. The fourth-round pick will be the better pick between Buffalo’s own and the one they acquired from Boston last March, which belongs to the Edmonton Oilers.
What they get in return are two rugged veteran defensemen with size and physicality. Both can play on the bottom pairing, hopefully providing better balance for the Sabres defensive core. The Sabres are also better insulated against a potential injury, something that would have been devastating before the trade.
Even better, both cap hits are meager (the Jets will retain 50% of Schenn’s $2.75 million contract) and can come off the books in the summer as both are unrestricted free agents. This is a move by the Sabres that says they believe in their team and that they aren’t making core changes now or for the near future.
Trade Grade: A-
For the Jets, this was all about selling off veteran assets and recouping draft picks and prospects. Rosen is solid, a potential top-six forward who has been on the cusp of the NHL for years. Bryson is a throw-in, someone who has struggled in the Buffalo lineup this season.
The Jets aren’t in a full rebuild but get a few pieces to help restock their lineup with youthful talent. They are more than likely done selling at this stage, barring some unforeseen move. The NHL trade deadline is on Friday, Mar. 6, at 3:00 PM EST.
