Gustavsson's homecoming effort isn't enough as Senators beat Wild in Sweden

Filip Gustavsson stopped 26 shots in his return to his home country, but his former team got the last laugh as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Minnesota Wild 2-1 in a shootout during an NHL Global Series game in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday morning.

The Wild and Senators skated through a scoreless first period before Marco Rossi put Minnesota on the board with his sixth goal of the season. While the Wild took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission, Erik Brannstrom tied it up for the Senators with his first goal of the year at 3:22 of the third period.

The game remained tied as Gustavsson kept the Senators off the board through the end of regulation and scoreless overtime and stopped Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson through the first two rounds of the shootout before Josh Norris snuck the game-winning goal under Gustavsson's glove in the third round.

Fellow Swede Joel Eriksson-Ek couldn't get a shot off the Wild's final attempt as Minnesota suffered its fourth straight loss and its eighth loss in the past 10 games.

Senators goalie Anton Forsberg stopped 24 saves to earn the win.

The Wild will play their second game of the Global Series when they face the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
