The Boston Bruins pulled off a 4-3 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday night, thanks to a late game-tying goal from Casey Mittelstadt and Pavel Zacha burying the OT-winner just 38 seconds into the extra frame.

The win puts the Bruins at 40-24-8 with 88 points through 72 games, fourth in the Atlantic Division and gives them the No. 1 Wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. Going into Thursday night’s slate of games, MoneyPuck has Boston at a 75.1% chance of making the playoffs.

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss the Bruins’ season and whether they have overachieved in 2025-26.

Tyler Yaremchuk: This year … the Bruins are overachieving, but I don’t say that in the sense of next year, they’ll come crashing down. They check a lot of boxes that a lot of elite teams need to check:

A good young goalie in Jeremy Swayman who is having a nice bounceback season; an under-30, top-paring defender in Charlie MacAvoy; David Pastrnak is a legitimate superstar, and now if it’s the James Hagens of the world and the Fraser Minten really is a top-six guy, and if they get another top pick from the Toronto Maple Leafs, you can see the path where they won’t just regress back next year.

Carter Hutton: I think what’s important is how they’re structured, right? You have Mittelstadt who has one more year left on his deal at $5.75 million, so if he has one more season and someone comes in and pushes him out…

It’s the same thing with Viktor Arvidsson: You paid him $4 million this year, and he gets you 20 goals. That’s a good buy. If you go out and bridge that gap with a couple other players in free agency, where you maybe see some value or a reclamation project … you can be that stop-gap to help protect Minten and Hagens so they can get to that level and be more dynamic.
