How concerning is the Jets’ recent slump?

Last season’s Presidents’ Trophy winners are not in a good place as we reach the halfway point of the 2025-26 campaign, as the Winnipeg Jets suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Edmonton Oilers Monday night, giving them six straight losses and nine in their last 10 games.

Since returning from injury, 2025 Hart Trophy and Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck has struggled, going 1-3-3 in seven games with an .893 save percentage (SV%), giving up three or more goals in four of those appearances.

Winnipeg is now 15-18-4 with 34 points, seventh in the Central Division and seven points back of a wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss the Jets’ recent slump and how concerned Winnipeg fans should be as we enter the new year.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I think a lot of people expected that once Hellebuyck was back in the lineup, they would be able to – no pun intended – turn on the Jets and get this thing back on track. But they’re 1-3-3 since their MVP goalie returned to the lineup.

How concerned are you about the struggles in Winnipeg?

Carter Hutton: I’m really concerned. Honestly, I feel like I was one of those people getting in line, saying “Let’s manage Eric Comrie’s run without Hellebuyck, then when he gets back, it will be a shot in the arm.” And he hasn’t been horrible, and there’s teams who would line up to get a .900 SV% on their roster.

But that being said, there’s just no depth to this lineup when you think about offense. You still have Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele, each with 18 goals, then Gabe Vilardi with 16, but it drops right off with Nino Niederreiter and Alex Iafallo with six goals.

Now you look at a Central Division that is absolutely star-studded. As of today, the Jets are 20 points back of the Minnesota Wild for third in the division. That is overwhelming, in my mind, to where they’re at.
