Max Domi missing the start of the season isn’t the kind of news that completely changes the Toronto Maple Leafs’ plans. But it is a problem Toronto probably didn’t need.
Domi failed his physical because of complications related to his offseason back surgery, and the Maple Leafs now expect him to miss all of training camp and at least part of the regular season. That’s more important than simply missing a few preseason games. Training camp is where players get their legs under them, build some chemistry and figure out where they fit. Domi will be playing catch-up while everybody else is already getting comfortable.
And that matters because Domi brings a little more to the team than his numbers suggest. He had 12 goals and 24 assists in 80 games last season. Those aren’t exactly eye-popping numbers, but that’s not really why Toronto has him. Domi brings energy. He brings some edge. He’ll mix it up. His 95 penalty minutes and 37 hits give you a pretty good idea of the kind of player he is.
The Maple Leafs need him to be available, difficult to play against, and able to move up and down the lineup without making the coach nervous. The bottom line is that he’s a useful player to have around. Domi can play with skilled players, add some bite to a checking line and give the team a little emotional jolt when things get flat. Without him, Toronto loses some of that flexibility.
The good news is that someone else now has a chance to show what he can do. A bubble player should get extra ice time in camp and an opportunity to earn a regular spot. Domi being out might even lead the coaching staff to try combinations they probably wouldn’t have looked at otherwise.
That’s the glass-half-full version. The other version is that Domi’s absence puts more pressure on the healthy players. Somebody has to replace his minutes, his physical presence, and, let’s be honest, a bit of the chaos he brings to a game. And if another injury or two shows up, that depth gets tested pretty quickly.
Could Domi’s Absence Become a Bigger Problem?
The biggest concern isn’t necessarily Domi missing a few games. It’s the uncertainty around when he’ll actually be ready. Back issues are hard to predict, and the longer he is out, the more questions there will be about what he looks like when he finally returns. So for now, this is both a setback and an opportunity.
The Maple Leafs can survive without Max Domi. But they’ll find out pretty quickly how much they miss that kind of player around. And sometimes you don’t really appreciate a little chaos until it’s gone.
