The Dallas Stars didn't overhaul their roster this summer, but one bold offseason decision could change everything, and it wasn't a trade or signing. It was behind the bench.
For the third year in a row, GM Jim Nill was honoured with the Jim Gregory Award as the NHL's top executive.
But he's not interested in trophies for the front office anymore.
After yet another Western Conference Final loss, Nill made his biggest move of the summer, he fired head coach Pete DeBoer and replaced him with Glen Gulutzan.
The coaching switch, combined with smart contract work and key veterans returning, signals a shift in Dallas.
It's no longer about "almost."
"We believe we're built to win now," Nill told reporters after the change. "The pieces are here. It's time."
And those pieces are legit.
Dallas returns with a top line of Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, and Mikko Rantanen.
Robertson had 35 goals last season, and Rantanen, acquired midyear, has cracked 100 points twice in the past three seasons.
Gulutzan isn't just here for structure, he's here to win.
He inherits a locker room with leadership, depth, and top-end skill.
Jamie Benn re-signed at just $1 million plus bonuses. Matt Duchene earned a four-year extension at $4.5 million after 70 points in 2024-25.
Both deals were praised for their value and impact.
As noted by The Dallas Morning News, Dallas didn't swing big on external moves-but they didn't have to.
They brought back leaders, locked in consistency, and changed the voice behind the bench.
I believe the Gulutzan hire might be the one move that finally pushes this team over the top.
Vegas oddsmakers now have Dallas among the top five Cup favourites.
And with a strong core, cap flexibility, and experience on every line, the Stars look more complete than ever.
The message in Dallas is clear: this time, they're all in.
