How Scott Laughton and Brandon Carlo fared in their Leafs’ debuts

Scott Laughton and Brandon Carlo were acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline and made their debuts with their new team Saturday, during a 7-4 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

It was a rollercoaster start for Carlo , who was on the ice for the first of Valeri Nichushkin’s three goals, during his first shift with Morgan Rielly. Carlo was on the ice again for Nichushkin’s second goal, before his play steadied during the second period, where he was a key component of the penalty kill. The 28-year-old led all Maple Leafs in ice time, playing 22:04, while being primarily paired with Rielly, who struggled throughout the evening.

“It was a little foreign at the beginning, but as the game went on, I started to find my footing a little bit more,” Carlo said post-game. “I really enjoyed having Mo. He was great to communicate on the ice. I think we can build some great chemistry from here.”

“They were fine. I know Laughts was on for a couple of goals against, but overall, I didn’t mind him,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said post-game. “I thought Carlo was good. He did his job. It is not easy (to join a new team) with no practice, but they have been around a long time. It takes a little time to form chemistry and figure everything out.”

Laughton didn’t make an appreciable dent on the game and lost a key puck battle that led to Nichushkin’s second goal. Toronto was outshot 7-2 when Laughton was on the ice at 5-on-5, and it was a forgettable night overall. The 30-year-old was accountable for his performance after the game.

“I’ve got a lot better. I think I can provide a lot more. It was pretty hectic, but it is an amazing feeling pulling the jersey over my head for the first time, looking in my stall, and seeing my name. I am very grateful to be here with his special group,” Laughton said.

“I’ll be better. I was probably over thinking in some situations. More talk. I’ll talk to my linemates more, figure out their tendencies, and build on our game to be part of the solution here.”
