How The Habs Should Split The Goaltending Duties

With the acquisition of Hunter Shepard, it appears that Jacob Fowler is with the Montreal Canadiens to stay regardless of whether they are playing back-to-back games. This means that the Canadiens need to make sure that he gets more than his fair share of starts the rest of the season to make sure that he continues to get game time to help with his development. However, at the same time, Jakub Dobes has been playing some great hockey for the Canadiens as of late and deserves to get a good number of starts as well. Therefore, how should the Habs split the goaltending going forward?

Considering Dobes got the start against the San Jose Sharks during Saturday’s game, it is very highly likely that Jacob Fowler will get the start against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday. This weekend was never really in question that this is what would happen given the back-to-back events. The real question comes after that, as there will be another 2 weeks between now and the Canadiens’ next back-to-back, which means that the coaching staff has decisions to make to keep both Dobes and Fowler fresh without keeping one of them going for a long period without a start.

After the weekend, the Canadiens’ next game will be against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. Since Fowler played for Boston College for 2 years before turning pro last April, playing him in that game regardless of Sunday’s result could be a good idea, as he should be motivated to beat the team of the city he played college hockey in. Not to mention, Fowler played really well at the end of December against the Bruins, where he made 26 stops to help the Hab team win 6-2. This gives all the more reason that he should be trusted to play against them once again.

From there, maybe the best way to do things is to split the schedule where Fowler and Dobes play every second game unless there is a situation where one of the goalies may have some more to play for.

For example, the Habs have 2 games against the Columbus Blue Jackets before the end of the season. Much like Fowler with Boston, Dobes having a chance to beat the team of the state he went to college in could be extra motivation that allows him to play better against them. However, unlike Fowler, Dobes didn’t have the same success when he played the Blue Jackets earlier this year, only making 20 saves on 23 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss. Therefore, it could be different when it comes to the Dobes and the Blue Jackets. If that’s the case, it may be best to just split the games evenly.

The reality is with the way things are going in the Habs’ net right now and the likelihood that Samuel Montembeault is done for the season, there likely won’t be a true starter between Dobes and Fowler. Although if/once the Habs get to the playoffs, they should analyze who has the hotter hand and run them as the starter for the 1st round to give them the best chance to win their first playoff series since 2021. At the end of the day getting them both to play an even amount is the best way to ensure that Fowler can continue developing while also rewarding Dobes for his solid season.

How would you split the Habs’ goaltending duties for the rest of the season?
