According to a team announcement, the Carolina Hurricanes have assigned defenseman Charles-Alexis Legault to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. Carolina did not make a corresponding roster move, leaving them with six defensemen on the active roster.
Legault, 23, is in a familiar position even though the Hurricanes are without defenseman Alexander Nikishin at the start of the 2026-27 campaign. Carolina drafted the Laval, QC, native with the 139th overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft from Quinnipiac University. Legault spent another year with the Bobcats after helping them win the National Championship before joining the professional ranks with the Hurricanes organization for the 2024-25 campaign.
Never relied upon for his offense in college, Legault had a respectable rookie campaign with the AHL Wolves. He finished with three goals and 14 points in 63 games with a +11 rating, although he went scoreless in two postseason appearances.
Last year, in his second professional campaign, Legault earned his way to the NHL level. Legault played 12 games for Carolina in the 2025-26 season, finishing with one goal and two points with a +5 rating, averaging 14:18 of ice time per game. Additionally, Legault blocked 10 shots and threw 13 hits while also managing a 56.8% CorsiFor at even strength.
Needing defensive depth with Nikishin seeking a trade, Legault made the defending Stanley Cup champions’ opening-night lineup this season. Unfortunately, neither he nor the team has gotten off to the best start, prompting today’s transaction. Now that Legault is off to the AHL, veteran blueliner Mike Reilly will draw into the Hurricanes’ lineup for the foreseeable future.
