The Carolina Hurricanes will be without one of their mainstay defensemen for at least a couple more games.

The team announced Tuesday that Shayne Gostisbehere will miss the remainder of their current “state fair” road trip.

Carolina has already played four of a stretch of six-straight road games, meaning Gostisbehere projects to miss the next two games and potentially return for next Tuesday’s home game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

In Gostisehere’s absence, look for Charles-Alexis Legault to continue to fill in on Carolina’s defense. Legault was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft after playing for Quinnipian University in Connecticut. Last season, Legault played 63 games for the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, notching three goals and 11 assists for 14 points.

Gostisbehere has been out with a lower-body injury since getting hurt in Saturday’s 4-3 overtime win over the Los Angeles Kings.

The Florida native is in the second season of a three-year, $9.6 million deal with Carolina. Last season, Gostisbehere led all Hurricanes defensemen in scoring, putting up seven goals and 38 assists for 45 points in 70 games played.

Now in his 12th NHL season, Gostisbehere has had a quality career. Drafted in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, the Union College alum spent the first seven years of his career in Philadelphia. His career-best season came in 2017-18, when he scored 13 goals to go along with 52 assists for 65 points in 78 games played. He finished top-10 in Norris Trophy voting that year.

Since leaving the Flyers for the now-moved Arizona Coyotes in 2021, the veteran has played the Coyotes, the Detroit Red Wings, and now a second stint with the Hurricanes.

Carolina currently sits atop the Metropolitan Division, with 10 points in six games played.
