'I couldn’t be prouder of Jakub Dobes.'

Jakub Dobes won again last night.Must be the Éric Raymond effect?

Joking aside, in the Canadiens’ 3-2 win over the Golden Knights, Dobes earned his fourth win in as many games in 2026. He has won six of the seven starts (13 points out of a possible 14) he has had since Jacob Fowler’s promotion.

His 16-5-3 record is excellent.

That has never been in doubt, mind you. What he is often criticized for these days is not having excellent technique in front of the net.

And yesterday, even though he made a few too many “Dobes-style” saves, his technique was much better. He did his job the right way.

After the game, a few guys made a point of highlighting the goalie’s performance, who had no choice but to come out strong. Noah Dobson, in particular, thought he was great.

And Cole Caufield said he couldn’t be more proud of his teammate.

It had been a long time since the Canadiens had seen one of their goalies play at .900 in a game, and yesterday, with 32 saves on 34 shots, Dobes was at .941.

Martin St-Louis will no doubt be delighted to take him on.

Will the goalie, who has three saves according to advanced stats, play tomorrow against the Nordiques at the Bell Centre? It’s possible to think so.

He certainly deserves it.

But that’s not all we should take away from yesterday’s game. The other goalie (Akira Schmid) made so many unexpected saves that he deserves credit for taking the game into overtime.

Besides the goalies, what else stood out in a game where Mitch Marner was booed frequently?

1. Phantom penalties make the National Hockey League look bad. It draws attention for the wrong reasons and causes more complaints than anything else.

Being a referee is a tough job, for sure. It’s fast-paced, and we know that.

But after the horrible penalty against Lane Hutson in recent days, seeing Cole Caufield also receive an apology from the referee for a penalty that doesn’t exist is… special.

Oliver Kapanen also got a penalty where he’s not really to blame… but the one on #13 is intense.

2. Speaking of Cole Caufield, he was denied a powerplay goal because, less than a minute earlier, there had been an offside call at the blue line.

We agree that according to the rules, it was the right call. But we also agree that the NHL should have the technology to avoid these situations.

If baseball has robots to help determine strikes and balls, the NHL can put a chip in its pucks. Right?

Never mind, Caufield still scored later in the game. He’s on a six-game streak with at least one goal and, for the second year in a row, he’s reached the 30-goal mark. He’s on pace for 46 goals right now.

3. Overtime was entertaining. After all, the Canadiens played four-on-three (due to a late-game penalty) right from the start. And the club went with four forwards at the beginning.

Playing four-on-four when the game returned to even strength gave Jake Evans the chance to play in overtime. And he turned into Cole Caufield by scoring a beautiful goal.It was his first career overtime goal—and he couldn’t believe it.

4. Speaking of overtime: we need to learn how to win in regulation.

Obviously, it’s better to win than to lose. But we must also remember that the habs have only 18 wins in regulation time this year (only four teams in the East are worse) and that this is an important tiebreaker at the end of the season.

5. Kirby Dach, with limited playing time (14:05), did well. He clearly understood his role as a fourth-line player and played the game in front ofhim.

Good for him.

6. Speaking of ice time: 8:16 for the Sheriff is very little. But at the same time, at the end of the game, he’s not the guy you want on the ice.

Will he play tomorrow? We’ll see.

Overtime

This morning, Martin St-Louis’s men will practice in Brossard at 11:30 a.m., a little later than usual. The goal? To prepare for the Colorado Nordiques’ visit tomorrow night at the Bell Centre.

Remember, there are four games left before the Olympics. The habs will also play on January 31 in Buffalo, February 2 in Minnesota, and February 4 in Winnipeg.
