Inconsistent play plagued Yegor Sharangovich’s 2024-25 season

Yegor Sharangovich had a career year in 2023-24.

The Calgary Flames acquired the Belarusian from the New Jersey Devils, along with the pick used to select Aydar Suniev, for Tyler Toffoli on Jun. 27, 2023. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, Sharangovich’s career-best year before joining the Flames was in 2021-22, scoring 24 goals and 46 points in 76 games.

In this article, we’ll look at what Sharangovich’s expectations were heading into the 2024-25 season, as well as how he performed last season.

Sharangovich’s 2024-25 expectations

The trade looked good for both the Devils and the Flames right off the bat. Toffoli scored 26 goals and 44 points in 61 games with the Devils before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets before the trade deadline.

On the other hand, Sharangovich put up new career highs, scoring 31 goals and 59 points in 82 games. He led the Flames in goals and was second in points at the age of 25. The Flames took notice of his success, signing him to a five-year, $28.75 million extension the first day he was eligible for it.

Safe to say that expectations were high for Sharangovich heading into the 2024-25 season. At the very least, it was expected that he’d score 25 goals, a step back from his numbers the year before. In an ideal world, the Belarusian would have a 2024-25 season as good or even better than he did in 2023-24. That didn’t happen.

How Sharangovich did in 2024-25

This past season, Sharangovich finished with 17 goals and 32 points in 73 games. While not a career-worst – he scored 13 goals and 30 points in 75 games in his final season with the Devils – it was a significant step back from his 2023-24 season.

His season was marred by lengthy goal droughts, including a 15-game drought from Dec. 5 until Jan. 11, where he picked up three assists. There was a nine-game stretch where he had one lone assist before snapping it with a goal on Mar. 29. Sharangovich went on a six-game goalless streak. His season was also married by an injury which disrupted his training camp.

The 26-year-old got hot at the right time, scoring four goals in three games from Apr. 7 until Apr. 11

Next season’s expectations

Will Sharangovich ever hit the 30-goal mark again? Perhaps. However, the expectations for Sharangovich should be his career norms, around 20-25 goals with 40-45 points. If the Flames can get that type of production from the Belarusian, that’d be a big help as they attempt to push for a post-season spot.

As for his report card, Sharangovich earned a C-. This upcoming season needs to be better from the soon-to-be-27-year-old.
