We have already learned, in the past few hours, that Montembeault has been relegated to the role of third goaltender and is unlikely to even be in uniform for Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
He is likely to watch 100% of the games from the stands at the Bell Centre.
Despite this, he has maintained a great attitude, even becoming emotional in an interview when explaining how much it means to him to be part of Team Canada after a difficult start to his career.
When you think about it, he went from NHL waivers to a spot on Team Canada. That makes him extremely proud, and rightfully so.
However, disappointing news broke in the past few hours, just a few hours before the tournament started.
What a great way to completely burst his bubble, right in the middle of the tournament and while all his Canadian teammates will see this news.
"In fact, on this matter, journalist and insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic revealed that the team's management regrets their choice of Montembeault to complete Team Canada's trio of goaltenders."
LeBrun adds that if they could do it over again, the Canadian executives would instead select MacKenzie Blackwood of the Colorado Avalanche.
I understand that LeBrun was doing his job, but it must be hard for Montembeault to hear about it while with his Team Canada teammates.
