Insider Doubts Maple Leafs' Chances of Signing Top Panthers' Pending Free Agent

As the Toronto Maple Leafs prepare for a potentially transformative offseason, speculation has started to pop up involving pending high-profile free agents from other franchises that might entertain signing with the Leafs, including Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett.

Bennett, still competing in the postseason, has scored 14 points in 15 playoff games after racking up 51 points in 76 regular-season games with the Panthers.

While Toronto fans would love bringing the Holland Landing native back to Ontario, TSN’s Darren Dreger doesn’t see it happening.

Speaking on "Leafs Morning Take," Dreger said he’s skeptical that Toronto will be Bennett’s next destination.

“I’m not convinced Sam Bennett wants to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs,” Dreger said. “And that’s not because he looks at all the nonsense that goes around this market.

“It’s just this guy is gonna have the pick of the litter.”

The 28-year-old center is expected to be one of the more sought-after names on the market when free agency opens July 1.

Sportsnet has ranked Bennett as the second-best pending UFA, only behind Leafs winger Mitch Marner.

Dreger noted that the interest in Bennett will be widespread, with teams across the league expected to make competitive offers regardless of cost.

With Bennett likely commanding a long-term deal and a salary raise over his current $4.425 million per season, the Leafs may not be able to present the most compelling offer.

The Maple Leafs are projected to have roughly $25.7 million in cap space, per PuckPedia.

Much of that room, however, is expected to be allocated toward existing roster needs and potential extensions for restricted free agents, including Matthew Knies
