Insiders Suggests Big Off-Ice Makeover Coming for Canucks

Elliotte Friedman hinted during Monday’s episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast that the Vancouver Canucks might be making big changes off the ice, specifically regarding their pro scouting department. The extent to which those changes impact the department is unclear, but the NHL insider hinted at a serious overhaul.

Friedman explained that there’s been a lot of discussion about potential changes in Vancouver Canucks management, but that he’s also heard those conversations could extend to the scouting staff. Vancouver is one of a few teams — New Jersey Devils being another — where many staff members don’t have contracts for next season. In Vancouver’s case, it sounds like almost the entire scouting department is unsigned.

That kind of uncertainty is difficult, he suggested. He then cited his own experience negotiating deals and noted that, in this business, contract negotiations often go down to the wire. Sometimes that’s used strategically to create pressure. It’s not easy, but it’s something you learn to handle over time. In the case of the Canucks, this might be more about the organization choosing to go in another direction.

Are the Canucks Bringing in New Pro Scouts?

In the past, teams were more cautious about letting staff enter the final year of deals without clarity, especially if they planned to keep them. The suggestion here is that if the Canucks have let all of these scouts get to term without an extension, they may not be resigned.

Friedman said that, in some of these cases, there have been internal pushes to address that, but it hasn’t happened in Vancouver.

As a result, there’s a growing sense that changes could be coming — not just in high-profile roles, but deeper in the organization. And when it comes to team-building, strong pro scouting is critical. Friedman noted that if that area isn’t handled properly, it can be a huge issue for a team trying to get better after a terrible season.
