Introducing the 2026-27 Flames opening roster

The Calgary Flames announced their opening roster for the 2026-27 season on Monday afternoon.

Here’s a rundown of all 24 players on the opening roster – 23 active players and one on the injury reserve list.

About the 2026-27 roster

The Flames’ roster features nine homegrown draft picks representing the 2007 (Backlund), 2018 (Pospisil), 2019 (Wolf), 2020 (Zary and Kuznetsov), 2021 (Coronato), 2023 (Honzek) and 2024 (Parekh and Gridin) drafts. The Flames are carrying 11 Canadians, four Americans, three Russians, three Slovaks, a Swede, a Czech, and a Belarusian.

The youngest player on the roster is Matvei Gridin (born Mar. 3, 2006), while the oldest player is Mikael Backlund (born Mar. 17, 1989). Three players on the roster – Honzek, Gridin and Parekh – weren’t alive when the Flames played in the 2004 Stanley Cup Final. Simon Nemec would’ve been three and a half months old when the Flames were in that series.

The tallest player is Adam Klapka (6’8″), the shortest player is Matt Coronato (5’10”). The heaviest player is Klapka (235 pounds), the lightest player is Dustin Wolf (166 pounds).

Changes from last season’s opening roster:

On the 2025 opening roster but no longer with the club are Rasmus Andersson, Jake Bean, MacKenzie Weegar, Daniil Miromanov, Blake Coleman, Justin Kirkland, Ryan Lomberg and Nazem Kadri.

New faces since last year’s opening roster are Simon Nemec, Jacob Middleton, Zach Whitecloud, Yan Kuznetsov, Ryan Strome, Maxim Tsyplakov and Brennan Othmann. Kuznetsov was promoted from the AHL, but everybody else joined the organization via trade over the past 12 months.

Coaching staff and management

The head coach is Ryan Huska (51; Cranbrook, B.C.), who’s entering his fourth season as Flames head coach.

The assistant coaches are Dave Lowry (61; Sudbury, Ontario), Trent Cull (53; Georgetown, Ontario), Cail MacLean (50; Middleton, Nova Scotia), Jason LaBarbera (46; Burnaby, B.C.) and Jamie Pringle (51; Picton, Ontario). Based on our understanding of things: the forwards are managed by Lowry and MacLean, the defencemen by Cull, the power play by Lowry, the penalty kill by Cull, goalies by LaBarbera and video by Pringle.

The general manager is Craig Conroy (55; Potsdam, New York), who’s entering his third season as Flames GM. His assistants are Dave Nonis (59; Burnaby, B.C.), Brad Pascall (55; Coquitlam, B.C.) and Peter Hanlon (St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador).
