Is draft prospect Luke Misa a fit for the Calgary Flames prospect pool?

With the Vancouver Canucks falling to the Edmonton Oilers this past Monday, the Calgary Flames will officially pick 28th overall.

On top of that, the Flames will pick in the early 40s as well with their second round pick, so in this article, we’ll look at one player who could be available at either one of these picks! 

Let’s take a look at Luke Misa!

Left-shot centre, born Nov. 25, 2005, in Oakville Ontario, 5’10”, 175 lbs

Kachow! Luke Misa is an 18-year-old centre playing for the Mississauga Steelheads. This past season was his best year so far in the Ontario Hockey League, scoring 26 goals and 81 points, beating out the 13 goals and 43 points he scored in 2022-23. Notably, he is the older brother of Saginaw Spirit left-winger Michael Misa, likely a top 5 pick in the 2o25 draft.

One thing you get to learn after watching so many drafts and reading so much content on said drafts is that once the lottery picks conclude, it is an utter crapshoot. Misa ranks anywhere from the high 20s from Dobber Prospects, The Hockey Writers, and Smaht Scouting, but ranks as Bob McKenziz’s 67th prospect and even lower from NHL Central Scouting, who ranks him as the 76th best North American skater.

His consolidated ranking according to Elite Prospects is the 41st best draft prospect, one spot below where The Athletics Scott Wheeler has him, while Daily Faceoff has Misa ranked 47th overall. In a recent The Athletic mock draft, Wheeler and Corey Pronman have the Edmonton Oilers picking Misa 62nd overall. This is to say that Misa could be picked anywhere, no one knows.

So what does Misa bring to the table? Well, his skating is some of the best in the draft according to Wheeler in his March update. He can use that speed to beat defenders and is good at passing, while being able to “process the game quickly at his speed”. However, he does stand at under six feet, which may be seen as a problem.
