Besides their 6-2 demolition victory over the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 19, the Arizona Coyotes (3-3) have only scored 10 goals in 5 games so far this season.

With a quarter of them, Coyotes star Clayton Keller has netted 4 goals out of the total of 16 tallies.

Additionally, Keller and winger Nick Schmaltz are both tied in the lead with 7 points in 6 games for the ‘Yotes.

Not far behind, Arizona rookie Logan Cooley has 5 assists this season.

With the rest of the Coyotes lineup, there have been multiple players with at least a point.

Meanwhile, there are seven players on the roster that haven’t gotten one yet.

However, four of them are defensemen with Troy Stecher, Travis Dermott, J.J. Moser and Josh Brown who aren’t necessarily all known for offensive production.

Two of the forwards, wingers Liam O’Brien and Alex Kerfoot, are on the fourth line and don’t nearly have enough time on the ice to make much of an impact scoring-wise.

However, one player that plays on the top power-play unit, first line and is given significant minutes without a point is ‘Yotes center Barrett Hayton.

Playing alongside Keller and Schmaltz, Hayton has been presented with more opportunities to score.

He just hasn’t gotten on the board.

Is it time to panic about Hayton’s scoring production and should his spot in the lineup be considered up for contention?

Verdict

Halfway through last season, Hayton was upgraded to Arizona’s first line after three seasons lower in the lineup.

Surprisingly, in Hayton’s last 20 games specifically, he had 19 points.

Playing a full-82 game schedule, Hayton potted 19 goals and 24 assists for 43 points.

So, with Hayton’s role as the #1 center on the Coyotes between Schmaltz and Keller, it was destined that he would be due for a breakout season.

But, it just hasn’t been the case to this point.

Unfortunately for Hayton, it looked like he scored his first goal of the season in the 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 24.

On the power-play, Arizona defenseman Sean Durzi took a wrist-shot that was deflected by Hayton.

With the redirect, Kings goaltender Pheonix Copley wasn’t able to pull off a save as the puck crossed the goal line.

Then, LA challenged that the goal should be waved off for offsides, and it was.

Before the play, Schmaltz entered into the offensive zone before the puck did and therefore, no goal.

Now, it has only been 6 games into the regular season.

Is it concerning that Hayton has yet to produce a point?

A bit, yes.

Also, behind Hayton, there is a player that could take his position before seasons end with Cooley.

As the top prospect of the Coyotes, Cooley has gotten off to a hot start with 5 points in 6 games.

Questions will be asked as the season proceeds with the basis around who should be the first line center for Arizona.

Regardless, Hayton occupies that position currently and sooner or later, the points will come.
