Is New York Rangers GM Chris Drury facing a rebellion?

New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury lit a wildfire in November after a league-wide memo detailing his desire to trade then-Rangers captain Jacob Trouba and long-time winger Chris Kreider leaked to the media.

Since that leak, the team is on a 3-9 skid. In total, the Rangers have lost 11 of their last 14 all in regulation. The reigning President's Trophy winner, which sat comfortably in a playoff spot before this all began, is now on the outside looking in at a playoff spot.

This led to Steve "Dangle" Glynn, the Toronto-based podcaster and host of the Steve Dangle Podcast, to suggest that Rangers players held a closed-door meeting to discuss Drury's actions as general manager.

Jonny Lazarus and Colby Cohen former players and current hosts of "Morning Cuppa Hockey" pushed back on Glynn's assertion that the players wanted Drury gone behind closed doors.

"The report that there was a Drury bashing session amongst the players in a room, it just couldn't be further from the truth," Cohen said. "And I talked to a number of players."

"Everyone has said this didn't happen," Lazarus said. "Listen, Colby and I aren't trying to start anything. People came to us and told us -- players came to us and told us."

Emily Kaplan of ESPN reported Monday on ESPN's "The Point" that there has been grumbling among some though not all players. Critically, she said, Drury remains in the good graces of owner James Dolan.

Drury's had an eventful few months telling reporters "nothing is off the table" in pushing the Rangers across the finish line after their second trip to the Eastern Conference Finals in three seasons ended with an identical six-game loss.

He then proceeded to open offseason discussions about moving two heart-and-soul players grinding bottom-six winger Barclay Goodrow and Trouba.

Goodrow's contract contained a modified no-trade clause, meaning there were teams the Rangers couldn't involve in a potential Goodrow trade. Instead, the Rangers utilized a loophole in the system placing Goodrow on waivers.

San Jose, the organization where Goodrow broke into the league a decade ago, claimed his contract. Goodrow was reportedly miffed by how the transaction went down, and Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman confirmed San Jose had been on Goodrow's list of unapproved teams.

The Rangers received no compensation from San Jose, but they were rid of the entirety of Goodrow's remaining three years at an average annual value of $3.64 million.

Similarly, the Rangers began talking to teams about Trouba. Their conversations began during the 2024 NHL Draft while Trouba still had a full no-movement clause in his contract.

As a result, talks stalled into the summer. The captain entered the season without resolution though he did acknowledge his understanding that, even with two years remaining on his contract, this would be his "last crack" in New York.

Fewer than two weeks after the trade memo, the Rangers would finally trade Trouba on Dec. 6 to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and a 2025 fourth-round pick.

The Rangers threatened to waive Jacob Trouba if he wouldn't accept a trade to one of the teams that had presented offers. Trouba, rather than risk being claimed by any team in the league, relented and agreed to be traded to Anaheim.

Drury extracted full value in getting rid of Goodrow and Trouba two useful players who were cap casualties.

It remains to be seen if this will be a victory for Drury or if the damage it caused will ultimately be his downfall.
