Is the time right for Eric Tulsky to become Hurricanes GM?

A huge change in management from one of the top teams in the NHL has left many wondering what the future holds.

On Friday, Carolina Hurricanes owner and governor, Tom Dundon, announced that president and general manager Don Waddell has stepped down from his post with the team. In connection with the move, the Hurricanes named Eric Tulsky interim general manager while the team is actively searching for a full-time replacement.

Tulsky seems like a safe choice to stay on with Carolina, as he has been with the organization since 2014, the same year Waddell joined the team as president. Tulsky has slowly climbed through the Hurricanes’ ranks, eventually being named assistant general manager in 2020. He has been involved in all player personnel decisions, as well as overseeing the team’s hockey information department and pro scouting. He went from being a consultant in 2014, to analysts, to vice president of hockey management and strategy. If there is someone that knows the Hurricanes very well, it’s Eric Tulsky.

He will be assisted by current assistant general manager Darren Yorke with the managerial duties while the Hurricanes search for a new boss.

As the news broke during Friday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss Tulsky’s resume and whether or not he’s ready to be an NHL GM.

Frank Seravalli: Will [the Hurricanes] make him the permanent GM? That means something. That’s a really important question for the Carolina Hurricanes to answer. My thought process would be: if not Eric Tulsky now, then when? If that’s not the case now, are the Hurricanes prepared to lose him?
