Is Tristan Jarry an option for the Oilers?

It’s hard to look at the Edmonton Oilers’ struggles through the first quarter of the 2025-26 season and not see goaltending as the main concern.

The duo of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Packard have a combined .868 save percentage, dead last in the NHL. While the team is 10-10-5 record through their first 25 games and have time to get back into the race, there’s still the fear that who they have in net just isn’t good enough.

NHL insider Kevin Weekes reported Wednesday that Pittsburgh Penguins’ goaltender Tristan Jarry is among the options drawing interest from the Oilers. The 30-year-old has a 6-2-0 record with a .914 save percentage and 2.53 goals against average through eight games in 2025-26.

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton are joined by The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta to discuss the Penguins’ goaltending situation and if Jarry is a fit for an Edmonton group that’s desperate for an NHL-caliber netminder.

Carter Hutton: Would the Oilers be in the hunt for Jarry? He’s played over 300 NHL games, and he’s got a career .910 save percentage. I feel like he’s a goalie who gets a bad rap – yes, he had a bit of a bad run, but he went into a Penguins team that was a dynasty and had Marc-Andre Fleury and Matt Murray.

Jarry is a solid goalie, so is this an option for Edmonton?

David Pagnotta: Right now, I still tend to lean towards the “no,” because of the cap hit. This isn’t a $3- or $2-million cap hit, this isn’t an $875,000 hit that some of the young guys have. This is still a dollar amount that has to be palatable for any team.

The Oilers just aren’t in a position right now, I think, to add somebody who is in the $4- or $5-million range, as much as they’d like to. That’s likely something that’s going to happen in the summer. They will deal with that at that point.

I know there’s so much talk with the Oilers and their goaltending, but they have different holes in this roster that they need to fill. That’s what GM Stan Bowman and co. are trying to do right now.
