The New York Islanders provided an injury update on defenseman Matthew Schaefer ahead of Tuesday’s home game against the New Jersey Devils.

The Islanders announced on X that Schaefer is considered day to day due to an illness. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at UBS Arena in Elmont.

Schaefer did not participate in Monday’s practice and will be a game-time decision. While the team has not ruled him out, his availability remains uncertain. If Schaefer is unable to play, Tony DeAngelo could take on a larger role, including added responsibility on the top power-play unit. Adam Boqvist is also a candidate to draw into the lineup if needed.

The timing of the illness is notable given Schaefer’s recent surge. After a quiet stretch late in December, the 18-year-old defenseman has caught fire in January. He has scored three goals on five shots over his last two games and is currently on a three-game, four-point streak. His strong play has been a bright spot for the Islanders’ blue line.

Schaefer is coming off a memorable performance against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored two goals, including the overtime winner, in a 4-3 victory. That game made him the first defenseman in NHL history to record two multi-goal games at age 18. He now sits tied for third among NHL defensemen with 12 goals and has totaled 28 points in 42 games.

Despite feeling under the weather that day, Schaefer pushed through and delivered. Whether he can suit up again on Tuesday will depend on how he responds ahead of puck drop.
