It hasn't been an easy start to the year for the New York Islanders. Despite having a 6-6-2 record and sitting in the middle of the pack of the Metropolitan Division, the team has had multiple obstacles to overcome.
Now, the Islanders have another player who will miss a significant amount of time. They shared that veteran defenseman Mike Reilly will be out indefinitely and is being placed on injured reserve. The news comes after the team previously shared that the defender was "day-to-day" with an upper-body injury.

The biggest issue plaguing the Islanders is their injury situation. They've been unlucky, or perhaps cursed, when it comes to players staying healthy.
The team recently lost star center Mat Barzal for at least a month due to an upper-body injury, giving the Isles a huge void in their offense to fill. They simultaneously lost defenseman Adam Pelech for the same time frame as he deals with his own upper-body injury. Those two joined winger Anthony Duclair on the long-term injured reserve list. Now, Reilly joins that list as the injuries continue to pile up for New York.
This is Reilly's second season with the Islanders. His first season was an all-around success. He played in 59 games and registered six goals and 24 points while averaging a dependable 17 minutes per game. So far this season, he appeared in the first 11 games. He didn't record a goal or assist, but he averaged just under 16 minutes of ice-time per game.
The 31-year-old Reilly is a veteran of 10 NHL seasons and 411 games. Originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets, he's spent his career with the Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers before joining the Islanders. Over his 411 games, he's collected 18 goals, 104 assists, and 122 total points.

Canadiens Edge Penguins in Shootout to Start Preseason
Everyone may have come to see Montreal Canadiens forward Ivan Demidov, but a few other Habs prospects turned the tide in favour of the home side on Monday night instead. For one, goalie Jacob Fowler sealed his team’s 2-1 shootout victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins to open both teams’ preseason schedules. Game Recap After Oliver Kapanen put the Canadiens 2-1 ahead in the shootout, Fowler stopped Avery Hayes to secure the win by that same score. Sean Farrell had scored the first marker in the shootout in the third round after goalie Sergei Murashov, who was otherwise stellar in the contest, making 19 saves on 20 shots, deflected the puck in off the initial shot. Penguins forward Tristan Broz responded immediately afterward to unofficially sully Fowler’s perfect night. A full other scoreless round followed before Kapanen went backhand on a deke to score the final tally of the evening. For his part, Broz, a 2021 second-round pick, had one of the better showings of anyone on the night. He showed quick hands and an even quicker release to get it past Fowler in the shootout. He also opened the scoring in the first period, on a power-play give-and-go with Valtteri Puustinen. Canadiens starter Sam Montembeault allowed the goal in what was otherwise a flawless 20-save performance, as he kept his flat-footed team in it early. The contest may have ended with a mere three-shot-on-goal difference (34-31 Penguins), but during Montembeault’s half of the game, the Habs got badly outshot and outchanced, only truly coming alive late in the second after a fight between Jared Davidson and Samuel Poulin (and the goaltending change, with Murashov replacing Joel Blomqvist on the Penguins’ side of things). At around the 17:00 mark of the second, Canadiens forwards Brendan Gallagher and Jake Evans traded chances to no avail. It took a few shots in close on Murashov early in the third, for potential-rookie Owen Beck to get the Habs on the board. The Canadiens had technically just let their second two-man advantage of the night go to waste, with Beck scoring mere seconds after Ryan Graves had left the penalty box (for holding Kapanen) to even things up. In recording four shots on goal, two blocked shots and three hits (and the goal), Beck furthered his case to make the team, with ironically Kapanen standing in his way. Despite Demidov hogging most of the attention heading into this one with top-line ice time and a good shot at earning the Canadiens a second straight Calder Memorial Trophy (Lane Hutson), he was quiet for most of the night. That’s if you ignore the noise the crowd understandably made whenever the 2024 fifth-overall pick touched the puck. Demidov’s best chance came in the dying seconds of overtime, when offseason-acquisition Noah Dobson fed him the puck for a one-timer that Murashov got a pad on, leading to the shootout (which he even opened only to be stopped by Murashov), and ultimately a happy home crowd. They after all got the win and impressive performances from several Habs prospects, even if none of them were named Demidov. The Canadiens continue their preseason schedule on Tuesday, as they host the Philadelphia Flyers. The Penguins next face the Columbus Blue Jackets on the road on Wednesday.
Details emerge on injury to Cowboys star wide receiver
The Dallas Cowboys’ defense endured another poor outing in Week 3. The team’s efforts to rebound will likely include a shorthanded unit on offense. CeeDee Lamb exited the Week 3 loss against the Bears with an ankle injury and did not return. It became clear afterwards that further testing would be needed to determine the severity of his injury. The All-Pro wideout now looks to be in line to miss time. “Certainly, he’s got a high ankle sprain and every one of those are different,” Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said of Lamb during a Monday appearance on 105.3 The Fan, via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “We’d love to have him back for Green Bay but at the same time we also got to understand the injury is what it is and we’ll play it out.” The Cowboys will play the Packers in Week 4, so Jones’ comments leave the door open to Lamb managing to avoid any missed time. Based on the reports which have emerged Monday afternoon, however, it appears far more likely Dallas will be without him for a short stretch. A timeline of two to four weeks is being considered internally, as first reported by Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. Since then, both Archer and WFAA’s Ed Werder have pointed to an absence between three and four weeks. Provided those are accurate, Lamb can be considered a lock to at least miss the Cowboys’ upcoming game against a Green Bay defense featuring Micah Parsons. Injured reserve is not being considered in this case, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. As such, Lamb is eligible to return at any time without needing to miss a stretch of four games or longer. The four-time Pro Bowler being back at full strength will be critical for the Cowboys’ offense, of course. On the other hand, it would be sensible to proceed with caution while managing Lamb’s injury. That could especially be true with George Pickens in the fold. Pickens will be counted on to operate as Dallas’ top pass-catching option until Lamb is healthy. It will be interesting to see when that will prove to be the case as the Cowboys aim to improve on their 1-2 start.
Steelers Could Be Planning To Use Week 5 Bye As An Opportunity To Make Unexpected Trade
The Pittsburgh Steelers improved to 2-1 after defeating the New England Patriots by a score of 21-14 in Week 3 of the 2025 NFL season. It has appeared as if Aaron Rodgers still has some game left at 41 years old, but the box score on Sunday didn't exactly instill confidence from an outside observer. He was only able to throw for 139 yards in the contest and the offense as a whole was only able to muster up 203 total yards. The unit will be facing a tough test in Week 4 when the team plays against the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland. The long-term plan for the Steelers at quarterback is a bit of a mystery. The organization could draft a signal-caller in 2026, or let Mason Rudolph and Will Howard compete for the job in training camp. The latter seems unlikely, given the fact that franchises need a dominant force playing quarterback to win, and neither of the options under contract for 2026 have proven themselves as much as fans would have liked. The fourth piece to the puzzle currently is Skylar Thompson. The former seventh-round pick showcased his talents in the preseason, and ended up putting plenty of good film on tape. He was one of the better signal-callers throughout the league during the exhibition period, and should have no business being an organization's fourth option. With Howard and Thompson both currently on Injured Reserve (IR), a decision is going to have to be made in the coming weeks about what to do with the emergency quarterback spot on game days. The Steelers are known for not holding onto more than three quarterbacks, so it's very possible that Thompson ends up getting released when, and if, all four players are healthy at the same time. After Pittsburgh's Week 4 matchup overseas, the team will have an early bye in Week 5. This will allow guys to get healthy, but also provide a unique opportunity to explore additions, or subtractions from the roster. Franchises have already experienced quarterback injury issues early on in 2025, and by the time Thompson is healthy, a decision could be made to deal him for a late-round draft selection. There's no guarantee that the Steelers would find a trade partner for Thompson, but as long as he is fully healthy, he's definitely someone to shop around. He is highly likely never going to see the field in Pittsburgh, but has some value because of how well he played during the preseason. Unfortunately for the Steelers, it doesn't make sense to part ways with a rookie while keeping someone else who is on a one-year deal. While Thompson won't be able to return to action until Week 7 (because the bye week does not count when a player is on IR) there is precedent to trade him anyway. The Patriots just traded Ja'Lynn Polk to the New Orleans Saints despite the receiver being on season-ending IR. Thompson's situation is a bit different, as he should be expected to return in 2025. Any team inquiring would need to be confident that he is fully healthy, because his 21-day window would need to be activated upon any deal. General Manager Omar Khan could be interested in getting yet another draft pick for 2026 if another organization throughout the league needs quarterback help. Steelers Hoping To Keep Rodgers Healthy All Season Pittsburgh's offensive line performed better in Week 3, but there is still a long way to go for the unit. While the other three quarterbacks don't necessarily matter for on-field play in games, the 41-year-old in Rodgers could be one hit away from the Steelers' signal-caller situation drastically changing. Overall, Thompson is at the bottom of the list, and could get traded soon if he is almost fully recovered from his injury.
Peyton Manning reveals advice he gave Daniel Jones about playing for Colts
When Daniel Jones signed with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason, he got some critical advice courtesy of Peyton Manning. Based on Jones’ performance through his first three games, it looks like it paid off. The quarterback has the Colts off to a 3-0 start on the young season and guest on ESPN’s Manningcast during Monday night’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions. With Manning being widely considered the greatest quarterback in franchise history, he is still heavily invested in the franchise. The topic came up of a conversation he had with Jones this offseason, letting him know what to expect from the organization. Of course, he also threw in a few recommendations about things to do in Indianapolis as well. “I gave him some important stuff,” Manning said. “Play golf at Crooked Stick. Go eat dinner at St. Elmo’s Steakhouse. The equipment managers of the Colts are the best in the NFL. Frog and T and Smack. They know what a 12-yard comeback is. They’re gonna line up in the right spot for the quarterback drills. “The equipment manager catches a lot of those passes from quarterbacks in drills. The equipment managers of the Colts, they know what a 16-yard break in is. So I told him he was in good hands with all those places and people.” Manning played for the Colts from 1998-2010 and led the team to a Super Bowl in the 2006 season. However, his brother Eli joked on the Manningcast that Jones was “already the greatest quarterback in Colts history” after his early performance this season. Jones leads all players with a QBR of 85.7 through the first three games, according to ESPN. He has thrown for 816 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions while completing 71.6% of his passes. Additionally, Jones has 55 yards rushing and another three scores on the ground. It’s been refreshing to see out of Jones, who spent the first six seasons of his career with the New York Giants before being released in the middle of last season. He’s been one of the bigger surprises so far this year after beating out Anthony Richardson for the starting job this offseason. We’ll see whether Jones can sustain those numbers going forward this year, but so far it looks like the advice he got from Peyton Manning went a long way. He’ll look to keep the momentum going heading into a Week 4 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.
