It was two years ago that best friends and rivaling competitors Ilya Sorokin and Igor Shesterkin competed in the NHL All-Star Skills competition together.
Shesterkin joked that he should have been the one to shoot pucks down the ice at the opposing net instead of Sorokin.
The New York Rangers touted goaltender is renowned for his puck-handling abilities around the NHL.
Sorokin, however, would be the first of the two to score in an NHL game on Saturday night. Though, ironically, the puck wasn't directly shot off Sorokin's stick.
Late in the Islanders’ 7-4 win over the Predators, Steven Stamkos misfired a pass to Brady Skjei after a Sorokin save, sending the puck drifting down the ice and into the Predators' empty net.
“I knew I’d do it before Igor,” Sorokin said jokingly after the victory.
With the tally, Sorokin became the second goalie in Islanders history to score, joining Billy Smith from 1979-80. He's the third netminder to do it this season with Pittsburgh's Alex Nedeljkovic and Minnesota's Filip Gustavsson in the books.

Islanders head coach and Hockey Hall of Fame legend Patrick Roy had never recorded a goal in his decorated 19-year career.
“It was part of my bucket list, scoring a goal in my career,” said Isles coach Patrick Roy, who had 45 assists but zero goals in his Hall of Fame career. “Hit the post once, I think. Scored [when] there was no more time. But anyway, I guess I was not the best goaltender out of my net. Would’ve been nice, but I didn’t have that shot.”
Shesterkin has taken many shot attempts at empty nets in his career with the Rangers. For Sorokin, scoring has never been a part of his bucket list.
“I never think about scoring goals,” Sorokin said. “It’s a moment, [it] happens. It’s a hockey game. [Stuff] happens.”
