For the second time this season, New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal was flagged for an act of embellishment, aka diving, during a regular-season game. The second occurrence will cost him some cash.
The NHL announced Thursday that it fined Barzal $2,000 as supplementary discipline following a flop that occurred in the April 22 game against the Washington Capitals. In the second period of that contest, Barzal reached for the stick of Washington forward Carl Hagelin during what Barzal perceived to be a hooking penalty. Barzal then fell to the ice, but per TSN, referees allowed play to continue without assessing a penalty to either man.
Barzal was first flagged for diving for the 2020-21 campaign during the Jan. 30 matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers. A first flag results in a warning, while a second earns a player a $2,000 fine. A third offense would cost Barzal $3,000.

Under NHL Rule 64, a coach receives a fine after players on his team have collected a total of four fines (not including warnings) for diving.
All fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
