Islanders’ Mathew Barzal Out Week-To-Week

The New York Islanders announced today that star forward Mathew Barzal will “not skate the next two weeks due to aggravation of a prior injury that has caused some inflammation.” Per the team, Barzal is “actively working to get back to full health” and the team expects him “to continue getting healthy and back in the lineup as soon as possible.”

Islanders preseason begins on Sunday and ends on Sept. 26, and the team’s opening-night matchup takes place Sept. 30 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Based on the timeline the team provided, it seems Barzal is set to miss the full slate of preseason games, and is almost certain to be unavailable for the first game of the season.

The exact nature of Barzal’s injury is unclear. He only missed a single game during the 2025-26 season, and that was not due to injury. But over the course of the year, there were smaller reports that indicated he was dealing with some sort of nagging ailment.

In April, after their season concluded, Barzal told the media that he was still working through things related to the injury he sustained in February 2025 that ended his 2024-25 season prematurely. A month later, it was announced that Barzal would miss the IIHF Men’s World Championships as a precautionary measure related to what Hockey Canada called “a minor, pre-existing injury.”

It is unknown whether Barzal’s current injury is related to the ailment referenced in those reports, but the fact that the Islanders specifically mentioned an “aggravation of a prior injury” does point to those nagging injuries as the culprit, even if we do not know for sure.

What we do know, though, is that any Barzal absence, of any length, deals a significant blow to the Islanders’ ability to win games on a nightly basis. He is arguably the team’s most dynamic and skilled forward, and the team’s most naturally talented offensive creator. Barzal led the team in scoring with 19 goals and 72 points last season, and scored 23 goals and 80 points in his other most recent healthy campaign. The 2018 Calder Trophy winner is a natural center, but has shifted over to the wing with some frequency since New York’s acquisition of Bo Horvat.

Now that the Islanders also have veteran center Brayden Schenn on their roster, it seemed Barzal would likely spend the bulk of the year along the wing. He appeared slated to begin the season on Schenn’s wing, but now that may have to wait for at least a few weeks.

New York missed the playoffs by slim margins last season, but has ambitions of returning to the postseason and seeing what its roster can do with one of the top goalies in the world, Ilya Sorokin, as well as generational defensive talent Matthew Schaefer. If the Islanders want to make a push to join the upper echelon of contenders in the Metropolitan Division, headlined by the reigning Stanley Cup champions, they’ll likely need Barzal to be fit, healthy, and firing on all cylinders.
