It looks as though Edmonton Oilers fans can finally rejoice. Connor McDavid has signed his much awaited contract extension to remain an Edmont Oiler. Terms of the deal are yet to be confirmed, but we will pass those details along as soon as they trickle through the pipeline.

McDavid Re-Signs

This news comes with relief for the Oilers organization and their fans. While it is unclear whether or not there was a legitimate chance McDavid would test free agency and possibly sign elsewhere, any fears of that can now be put to rest.

McDavid’s Resume

McDavid’s first NHL season was in 2015-16. In 712 NHL games, McDavid has scored 361 goals and added 721 assists for a total of 1,082 points. During the 2022-23 season, McDavid led the league with 64 goals.

In his playoff career, McDavid has scored 44 goals in 96 playoff games. Furthermore, McDavid led the league in points during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This helped McDavid win the Conn Smythe Trophy despite the Oilers losing the Stanley Cup Final. This past season, McDavid led the Oilers back to the Stanley Cup Final, becoming the first Western Conference team to advance to consecutive Finals since 2008-09. Unfortunately for McDavid and the Oilers, they were defeated once again.

99 and 97

Many parallels have been drawn between McDavid and Wayne Gretzky. Both are NHL and Oiler legends. The difference is that Gretzky left the Oilers while it is looking like McDavid will spend his entire career with Edmonton.

However, the one thing Gretzky has over McDavid at the moment is the Stanley Cup. While Gretzky won the Stanley Cup four times with the Oilers, McDavid has yet to capture Lord Stanley. Until McDavid is able to get his hands on the Cup, that will be the thing that truly separates him and the “Great One” when it comes to success in Edmonton.

The good news is, the man they call “McJesus” in Edmonton is staying put, with many more opportunities to get his hands on the Stanley Cup.
