For the second time in four years, Jack Eichel and the Vegas Golden Knights are headed to the Stanley Cup Finals.
A stunning sweep of the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche featured Eichel at the forefront, producing offensively while simultaneously neutralizing one of the best in the world in Nathan MacKinnon.
It was more of a coming-out party for a player already seen as an absolute superstar, but he’s taken himself to a whole new level — one that analyst Colby Cohen believes puts him at least on par with Connor McDavid in the postseason.
“If you would have asked me four months ago going into a playoff series who you want as your number one center, it would be Jack Eichel… I’ve got to tell you something — I’d have to think long and hard if you told me I could pick between Eichel and McDavid for a playoff series. I’d have to think really, really hard about that. It wouldn’t be a slam dunk that I want Connor McDavid as my one center, and it’s because in the playoffs different things matter,”
The 29-year-old Eichel has racked up 18 points (two goals, 16 assists) through the first 16 games of the playoffs. This comes after tallying 90 points (27 goals, 63 assists) in just 74 games played during the regular season.
Nobody is as gifted or has anywhere close to the same abilities as McDavid, but what Eichel does provide is a style of play that leads to success at the most important time of the year, and that’s been on full display of late.
From the Winter Olympics as a staple on Team USA’s gold medal team to now with the Golden Knights, it’s been a remarkable stretch of hockey for the 2015 second-overall pick.
He’s already built quite the resume with a Stanley Cup and Olympic gold medal in his back pocket, and another championship would only further cement his growing legacy.
