Team USA forward Jack Hughes scored the goal that ended Canada’s reign over the U.S. and did it with a bloodied lip and missing teeth.

Hughes scored 1 minute, 41 seconds into three-on-three overtime to lift the United States to a 2-1 victory over Canada in the 2026 Winter Olympics gold-medal game, securing the nation’s first men’s hockey gold since 1980.

The dramatic finish capped a tournament in which Team USA went 6-0 and finally broke through against a Canadian squad that had dominated best-on-best international play for more than a decade, including winning last year's 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

The Americans were outshot 42-28, including a 28-13 stretch over the final 35 minutes of regulation, turning goaltender Connor Hellebuyck into the other star of the game.

Hellebuyck was the backbone of the American victory, turning aside 41 shots and denying multiple grade-A chances from the likes of Connor McDavid, Macklin Celebrini and Devon Toews.

Team USA struck first on Sunday when Matt Boldy split Cale Makar and Toews for a highlight-reel goal in the first period. Makar eventually tied the game for Canada late in the second, beating Hellebuyck with a perfect shot from the circle.

The defining moment for Hughes came in the third period, as he took a high stick to the mouth from Canada's Sam Bennett, losing part of his tooth and drawing blood.

In the extra frame, Zach Werenski found Hughes streaking into space. The American forward buried the chance past Jordan Binnington, silencing a Canadian team that had won 15 consecutive best-on-best Olympic games with NHL players prior to Sunday.

Still visibly missing teeth and smiling through the aftermath, Hughes delivered a postgame message that quickly drew attention.

“It’s all about our country right now. I love the USA, I love my teammates — it’s unbelievable,” Hughes said. “The USA hockey brotherhood is so strong, and we had so much support — I’m so proud to be American today.”

Fans quickly reacted to Hughes' gritty performance and patriotic message on X.

"Still brings tears to my eyes. What an interview," an account posted.

"This is a quote for the ages. For every Olympic athlete representing the United States of America, This is how you do it," another user replied.

"One of the best post-game interviews ever! Great perspective, pride and humility !!" former Villanova Wildcats men's basketball head coach Jay Wright said.

"Sure was. Incredibly passionate and honest! Poor guy is probably going to get cancelled now for simply saying he is proud to be an American," another user acknowledged.

"Absolutely! Humble, hungry and unabashedly American," an account stated.

"You’re an American legend yourself!!!," a sixth user wrote.
