Jacob Doty, Matt Villalta reportedly returning to the Ontario Reign

Doty, 29, had the second-most penalty minutes on the team with 89 (Austin Wagner had 107). He chipped in a goal and two assists during his 41 games in Ontario while playing a fourth-line role.

The Denver native has spent the past three seasons with the Reign, totaling two goals, three assists, and 186 penalty minutes in 71.

The veteran winger originally signed in Ontario for the 2019-20 campaign and has been in the Inland Empire ever since.

Doty may not be the only player coming back to the Reign. PuckPedia is reporting that Matt Villalta has also signed a one-year extension to come back to Ontario:

The 23-year-old Villalta is coming off his best season, posting career bests in wins (28), goals-against average (2.98), and save percentage (.903).

It is expected that Villalta will be the number one netminder for the Reign again, though he will have competition behind him with the likes of Lukas Parik, Jacob Ingham, and David Hrenak.

With Jonathan Quick entering the last year of his contract with the LA Kings, this will be a big opportunity for Villalta to see if he can start establishing himself as an option for the NHL.

It should be noted that Villalta’s signing has not yet been made official by the LA Kings or Ontario Reign.
