Rankings

After coming over from Czechia, left-shot defenseman Jakub Vaněček had an intriguing rookie showing for the Tri-City Americans. He recorded 14 goals and 21 assists in 56 games in a top-four role.

In addition to his time in the Western Hockey League (WHL), Vaněček was a major standout at the U18 World Championship. He had a team-leading three goals and added two assists in Czechia’s bronze-medal-winning effort. Earlier in the calendar year, he won silver at the World Junior Championship.

Even if he’s not viewed as a super high-upside prospect by most, Vaněček has the tools to succeed at the next level. His skating, for one, is at an encouraging spot—perhaps his most valuable trait. Even when he’s playing the opposition somewhat tight, Vaněček keeps up with them. He can also carry the puck up the ice.

Vaněček’s defense is a big plus for him at this stage of his development, too. He’s good at shutting plays down, preventing entries, and things of that nature. His positioning is solid, closing passing lanes and putting his opponents in tough spots, occasionally leading to dangerous turnovers. Furthermore, he’s reliable on zone exits, remaining calm under pressure.

Throughout the season, there were some offensive flashes from Vaněček. His shot is above average, and he showed power-play upside with Tri-City and at the U18s. Plus, he has a decent set of hands, allowing him to get by defenders 1-on-1.

Overall, Vaněček displays a lot of the traits you like to see out of modern NHL defensemen. He’s sound in his own end, carries the puck, has offensive potential, and can skate you out of trouble.

Other THW Draft Profiles

Jakub Vaněček  NHL Draft Projection

Before the U18s, Vaněček’s draft projection was probably somewhere along the lines of a pick between the 60s and the 80s. After his performance and some insight from Allan Walsh, don’t be surprised if he sneaks into the first round.

Quotables

“Vanecek is a well-rounded player with a strong skill set that includes excellent skating, mobility, and puck skills. He excels in both offense and defense, making smart first passes and subtle plays to trigger breakouts. In the defensive zone, he demonstrates strong gap control, pinning and finishing hits effectively without being overly physical. Vanecek is also a reliable one-on-one defender and puck handler, capable of carrying the puck when space allows.” – Neutral Zone

“He beats opponents by taking their space away and forcing them to the perimeter. Vanecek isn’t too shabby with the puck, although his decision-making needs a bit of work. I like his two-way game and I think he’ll force his way into a bottom-pairing situation one day.” – Steven Ellis, Daily Faceoff

“He’s not super physical, but he competes, he can move and shoot pucks, he skates well and he quickly figured things out in North America. I’m not sure he has PP or PK value up levels, which made me a little resistant to ranking him when there started to be noise around him in the late fall, but he’s a good player and a worthy mid-round pick.” – Scott Wheeler, The Athletic (from ‘2026 NHL Draft ranking: Gavin McKenna, Ivar Stenberg top Wheeler’s March top 64 list,’ The Athletic – March 17, 2026)

NHL Potential

A possible ceiling for Vaněček is a No. 5 defenseman in the NHL—someone who does just about everything well. If his first WHL campaign was any indication, he’s got potential.
