James Hagens Suffered Injury

James Hagens being out at any length for the Bruins would be a major loss.

Hagens, in the Bruins 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, played 15 shifts for 11:57 TOI before a cross-check from Samuel Girard seemed to impact him severely. While speeding through the neutral zone to try and get an edge on the defender, Girard managed to land a cross-check into the lower back of the forward, who, after attempting a deke move, twitched and had difficulty willing himself off the ice.

He did not return after the infraction, and the Bruins have yet to provide an update on his status.

Quite a statement to make in the first stanza regarding a 19-year-old who is getting his feet wet in the NHL. However, Hagens’ start as a rookie has been nothing short of stellar for himself and the Bruins, who have lacked a young player who has such skill in his game. Six goals for 12 points in 16 games to start 2026-27 has been among the top rookie scorers throughout October for Hagens, and unlike his first-year counterparts, he ranks around 30th in average ice time, as Marco Sturm has utilized him as a third-line winger to Casey Mittelstadt and Elias Lindholm, which has fared as Boston’s best line, with a +5 goal differential in 13 games played.

Then again, it’s not even Hagens’ skill that has helped him produce at this clip; more so, his will and hockey sense have helped him become effective in all three zones of the ice. Eight out of nine rookies with the most blocks so far this season are defensemen; Hagens, as the only forward among those nine, ranks fourth with 19 shots blocked. Five of his six goals have been in net-front scoring chances, providing a need for a Bruins team that lacked such high-danger scoring last season. Boston was 29th in high-danger shot opportunities in 2025-26, and yet the 5-foot-11 forward, who’s yet to crack 200 pounds, has been the least fearful of going into the areas that would seem to make him vulnerable to getting pushed around more.

Hagens is in year two of a three-year entry-level contract that began in his short NHL stint in 2025-26. Boston originally selected him seventh overall in the 2025 NHL Draft.
