Jamie Benn’s Collapsed Lung Puts Stars in New & Early Season Bind

Well, here we go again. Just when Dallas Stars fans thought they might catch a break after last season’s playoff disappointment, their captain decides to spring a collapsed lung on them. Because apparently, regular hockey injuries weren’t dramatic enough for 2024.

Jamie Benn, the 36-year-old heart and soul of the Stars, will miss the start of the season after undergoing surgery for a collapsed lung Thursday. The veteran forward is now looking at a four-week recovery period, which means he’ll be watching from the sidelines when Dallas opens against Winnipeg on October 9th.

How Did This Happen to Jamie Benn?

The injury occurred during Tuesday’s preseason game against Minnesota, because of course it did. In what can only be described as hockey’s cruel sense of humor, Benn wasn’t even involved in some bone-crushing check that would make highlight reels. Instead, he was simply trying to protect the puck when a Wild player came in from behind.

“It was almost kind of a fluke,” Stars GM Jim Nill explained, probably while internally screaming into the void. Benn skated to the bench and told the coaching staff something didn’t feel right – which, in hockey terms, usually means you’re either dying or you’ve torn something important.

The Stars’ medical staff deserves credit here. They recognized something was wrong and got Benn to the hospital for X-rays. The diagnosis revealed a small hole in his lung, leading to emergency surgery at Parkland Hospital.

What This Means for Jamie Benn’s Recovery Timeline

The recovery process isn’t exactly convenient for a professional athlete. Benn is completely shut down for at least the next month, which includes a ban on air travel due to pressure concerns with his lungs. So much for any team bonding trips or away games during his recovery for Jamie Benn.

They expect it to be close to healing for contact after four weeks and we’ll see after that,” Nill said, which is GM-speak for “we’re hoping for the best but preparing for disappointment.”

For a player who’s logged 1,192 regular-season games and dealt with his fair share of bumps and bruises, this has to be particularly frustrating. You survive 17 NHL seasons, countless body checks, and stick battles, only to be sidelined by what amounts to a freak accident during a meaningless preseason game.

Who Steps Up in Jamie Benn’s Absence?

This creates an interesting opportunity for younger Stars players to prove themselves early in the season. The team has invested heavily in building depth over the past few seasons, and now they’ll find out if that investment pays dividends. Players like Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, and Wyatt Johnston will need to shoulder more leadership responsibilities both on and off the ice.

The silver lining? The Stars have dealt with adversity before and found ways to overcome it. This isn’t a season-ending injury, and Benn should return sometime in November.

Looking Ahead for the Stars Captain

At 36 years old, with 956 career points under his belt, Jamie Benn has nothing left to prove in terms of his hockey legacy. But you know he’s going to be chomping at the bit to get back on the ice and help his team make another playoff push.

The timing stinks – there’s no sugar-coating that. Missing the start of the season means missing opportunities to build chemistry with new linemates and establish early-season momentum. The next four weeks will tell us a lot about both Benn’s recovery and how well this Stars team can adapt without their emotional leader. One thing’s for certain – when he does return, he’ll have plenty of motivation to make up for lost time.
