Sidney Crosby vs. Connor McDavid? Yawn. Crosby’s chase to pass Mario Lemieux on the all-time scoring list? Snoozefest. The real highlight of Tuesday’s game between the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins is the battle between the pipes. Four days after the Oilers and Penguins agreed to swap goalies, with the Oilers getting Tristan Jarry and the Penguins getting Stuart Skinner (and a couple other pieces for their trouble), the two teams will square off in Pittsburgh with their newly acquired netminders set to face their former teams.
Both Skinner and Jarry will be plenty motivated to show they were the best goalie involved in the trade. Jarry has already made his Oilers debut, getting the win in Edmonton’s 6-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Skinner, however, will be making his first start for the Penguins on Tuesday, which will give him the opportunity to impress his new team and spite his old team all at once.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by The Sheet‘s Jeff Marek to discuss the big Skinner vs. Jarry showdown.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Edmonton vs. Pittsburgh. There’s so many storylines in this game. We’re getting Jarry vs. Skinner. (Leon) Draisaitl is one point away from 1,000, and Sid is two away from passing Mario for the Pens’ all-time scoring lead as well. Which one of those three gets your juices flowing the most?
Jeff Marek: I mean, the immediate one, just because it’s juicy and I love an old goaltender duel. I really love goalies looking down 200 feet away from the other guy and just saying “I am going to stop everything.” Speaking of Linus Ullmark, I remember whenever Rochester would play Utica, I would get these texts from people saying “You have to be here because right now Linus Ullmark and Thatcher Demko are putting on an absolute clinic.” Goalies staring down the other goalie thinking “I’m making the next save. I am going to make the last save.” I love goalie duels. So, for that one, I understand the numbers may be bigger with bigger names attached to them, but for me give me the goalie duel.
