Blockbuster trade talk has once again put the Dallas Stars at the center of speculation, this time with the New York Rangers being linked to a massive offer for Jason Robertson.
The Rangers, who shockingly missed the playoffs last season, are widely expected to make an aggressive move before 2025-26 begins. One trade proposal from Heavy.com has stirred debate by suggesting a package built around Gabriel Perreault, Brennan Othmann, and multiple picks in exchange for Dallas's star forward.
Proposed deal:
To Rangers: Jason Robertson
To Stars: Gabriel Perreault, Brennan Othmann, 2026 first-round pick, 2028 third-round pick.
Robertson, 26, is entering the final year of his four-year, $31 million deal and remains one of Dallas's most reliable scorers. He finished last season with 80 points in 82 games, though his postseason production sparked questions after a quieter playoff run.
The trade framework highlights the Stars' biggest challenge: the salary cap. With Mikko Rantanen now carrying a $12 million cap hit and younger players like Thomas Harley due for raises, GM Jim Nill has limited flexibility.
Moving Robertson would instantly clear space while landing two high-upside former first-rounders. Perreault, selected 16th overall in 2021, is viewed as a skilled winger with top-six potential. Othmann, meanwhile, has yet to carve out a permanent NHL role in New York and could benefit from a fresh start in Dallas.
But trading Robertson also comes with major risk. He has been a cornerstone of Dallas's forward group alongside Roope Hintz and Wyatt Johnston, and losing him would test the Stars' ability to remain among the NHL's elite.
NHL.com's Dan Rosen recently put it bluntly:
"It's probably 50/50. It really depends on whether Dallas and Robertson want to get a new deal done sooner than later."
For the Rangers, the motivation is clearer. With Artemi Panarin entering the final year of his contract, acquiring Robertson would give New York a superstar insurance policy while keeping their contention window wide open.
Personally, I don't see Dallas pulling the trigger unless Robertson makes it clear he won't re-sign. But the fact his name is even being floated shows just how complicated the Stars' cap picture has become.
