Jersey numbers announced for Flames’ new arrivals

The Calgary Flames have announced the jersey numbers that their two newest acquisitions will wear — as well as a change in digits for one of their top forward prospects.

Unsurprisingly, Joel Farabee will retain the No. 86 that he donned throughout the majority of his tenure with the Philadelphia Flyers. After initially wearing No. 49 with Philly, Farabee switched to 86 as a sophomore and has worn it ever since, including in his 22-goal, 50-point season with the Flyers in 2023-24.

To allow Farabee to wear No. 86, young forward Rory Kerins has switched to No. 6, which he also wears with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers. Kerins wore 86 in his five games with the Flames earlier this season but will now have a single digit on his back in any future NHL assignments with the club. He’ll become the first forward to wear No. 6 with the Flames since Gino Cavallini in 1985-86 (h/t to @nitwitschool on Twitter for that tidbit).

Frost, who wore No. 48 throughout his tenure in Philadelphia, has taken the opportunity to switch back to No. 16, which he wore during his time with the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds. The Flyers retired No. 16 back in 1984 in honour of Bobby Clarke.

Meanwhile, the Flyers announced on Friday afternoon that Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier will both keep the numbers they wore in Calgary. That means Kuzmenko will wear No. 96 in Philadelphia and Pelletier will retain No. 22 in the orange and black.

According to Flames general manager Craig Conroy, Farabee and Frost will both make their Calgary debuts on Saturday as the Detroit Red Wings visit the Scotiabank Saddledome. Don’t be surprised if the two close friends start out on the same line with the Flames.

The Flames parted with their own 2025 second-round pick and 2028 seventh-round pick to swap Kuzmenko and Pelletier for Frost and Farabee on Thursday. Through 50 games this season, the Flames rank fourth in the Pacific Division and eighth in the Western Conference with a 25-18-7 record and 57 points.
