After winning the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s top regular season team a year ago, the Winnipeg Jets are looking less and less likely to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season.
Even after a 6-2-2 stretch, the Jets made up very little ground in the standings, and they remain eight points back of the cut line for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.
With the NHL trade deadline just over a month and change away, it’s likely the Jets will be selling off their available pieces. That likely includes Logan Stanley, a sizable defenseman with a $1.25 million salary cap hit that will look very enticing to interested buyers.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by NHL insider David Pagnotta to discuss what’s next for Stanley as Winnipeg gets ready to sell at the deadline.
Carter Hutton: “A couple other teams that I wanted to touch on in the Central Division that we’ve heard a little bit of rumors around being active would be like Dallas and Winnipeg. Where do they go? I know there’s been ties to maybe [Nazem] Kadri and [Logan] Stanley being moved out of those pieces.”
David Pagnotta: “We’re going to be hearing more about Logan Stanley and Logan Stanley, pending free agent, everything that I’ve been told now is that it looks like this is going to end in some type of trade. They haven’t had any significant contract discussions to this point and there’s a bit of an expectation around him that he is going to be moved at some point between now and the trade deadline, maybe before Olympics, but it looks like the writing might be on the wall there for Logan Stanley and Winnipeg. There’s going to be a lot of interest in this player with how he’s playing this season, a bit of a coming out season for him and with a sweetheart cap hit. So there’s going to be a lot of interest in Logan Stanley if they go in this direction. He’s going to cash in on a pretty solid ticket as a free agent, but right now the focus seems to be trying to trade.”
Tyler Yaremchuk: “Yeah, those guys in that one and a half, two million dollar range, I think it’s important to remember when we’re talking about their value that the playoff cap thing has totally changed this year. So even teams that have been a crewing throughout the season and can maybe afford a five, six million dollar piece, they might still lean towards those cheaper options because come playoff time, you’ve still got to find a way to make it all work.”
