Jets' Mark Scheifele out vs. Ducks due to COVID-19

The Winnipeg Jets continue to have a rough start to the season.

It was previously learned that Winnipeg center Mark Scheifele tested positive for COVID-19 Wednesday morning but later returned a negative test. Had he tested negative a second time, he could've participated in Thursday's home opener against the Anaheim Ducks.

However, the NHL's website updated that Scheifele tested positive again Thursday morning and is now in the league's COVID-19 protocol. His status beyond Thursday night is unclear.

The news comes after the Jets announced before Tuesday's matchup against the Minnesota Wild that captain Blake Wheeler tested positive and was symptomatic. Wheeler missed that contest and will remain sidelined for at least an additional three games, per league rules.

Thus far this season, Scheifele has two assists and no goals after he led the Jets with 63 points and 42 assists in 2020-21, per ESPN stats.

Meanwhile, winless Winnipeg enters Thursday night at 0-2-1 to face 2-2-0 Anaheim. The Ducks beat the Jets 4-1 on Oct. 13.
